  • V-ray for Rhino grasshopper rendering diamond.

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with my diamond rendering made trough grasshopper. I have been trying to fix the light settings and diamond material settings in many ways, but no light seems to reflect trough the diamonds. See the photo.
Anyone in here whom might know how i can solve this problem?

    Kind regards,

    Martine

    Hi MartineLindskjold,

    You GH setup looks right.
It is also hard for me to tell what the problem with the image is - it depends on what you're after.

The thing I'd check is the texture in the Dome Light Rig.
It'll greatly affect the reflections and refractions of the diamond.
Try changing it to see what happens.

Can you also share a reference image of what you're after and possibly the diamond model for testing?

    Regards,
    Konstantin

Yeah thanks, but i was looking for something more like this: this is rendered in vray/rhino without grasshopper, and the results look way better and more real.. this is what makes me wonder if it is something in grasshopper making the diamond werid... Light setting should be the same

        Hello,

The reason that your reference image looks differently is because there is more geometry which is being reflected and refracted through the gems. So you can try to fully build that piece of jewelry and the gems themselves will appear much differently. Furthermore you can adjust the number of bounces of the traced rays within the gem material by changing its reflection/refraction Max Trace Depth values. You can check Examples how that works from the following link https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...eflectionDepth.
Once your scene is fully set up you can add caustics and dispersion to boost up its photorealism. Let me know if you need any further information.

        Kind regards,
        Natali

          Hi Natali,

Thank you for your reply, great help. I will try out what you just wrote.
It was a mistake to show the diamond alone like that, coz the problem is that it also looks super dead inside of af setting in a ring as well. But when the image is a rendering of a grasshopper code, then it is not actually geometry(not baked) and then it can maybe be also why it is acting differently the the rendered geometry inside rhino?

          Kind regards,

          Martine

One of the main benefits of using V-Ray in Grasshopper is that it correctly renders all GH geometry without the need of baking it beforehand.

            Kind regards,
