  • blending materials at different texture frequency

    Hello,

I'm trying to get rid of some remnants of tiling in some of the materials I'm using.

I've cleaned as much as possible in Photoshop already, tiles are seamless and most conspicuous visual details have been taken out. However, even though I can't even see it on the texture myself, there is still a pattern showing up when I render.

To resolve this, I would like to make two variants of the texture map, both slightly different. then blend them, but I would like to have the second material in the blend repeat at a different frequency than the first one, to obtain some sort of moire effect, but so big that you can't notice it anymore, while at the same time, no spot on the surface that the blend has been applied to, is the same.

Anyone have an idea of how to do this?

You could use the texture repeat option at the material level. At VfR3 it can be found under texture placement.

      Thanks Micha for your help.

I've done accordingly, however there's no effect to be seen. Something must be off...

I'm trying to render a stone material with linear slits. I've made two versions of the texture, one is at 100% (512x512px), the second is at 120% size, but without scaling the texture itself. I've used the clone stamp in PS to change the second texture.

As you said, I've changed the repeat for the second texture: at 0.8333 (100/120)

From these two, I've made a blend material with the 100% texture as base and the 120% as coat.

The blend itself was directed by a noise map:

Also the repeat for this noise map was done at a different frequency, at a scale of 185%, in order to have the blend affect at different intervals on the textures.

However, all this still gives me the same effect.

Any idea where I could have gone wrong in my approach??

        I don't have VfR3 running here, only VfR2, so I can't more help you.

          no problem,

for the time being, I've focused on cleaning the textures further, by drawing a grid over them, then render and see where there are till conspicuous blotches on the texture, relative to that overlaid grid. Then in PS I corrected the textures.

You can send a sample of your scene for investigation by archiving it (V-Ray > Pack Project) and sending it over at support@chaosgroup.com
If you decide to do so, be sure include the full version number of V-Ray for Rhino you are using CPU / GPU render engine.

            Kind regards,
            Peter
