    Dynedain:
Doing an export to the renderer has one other big unmentioned advantage. At that point all you need is an importer to bring it back into whatever other app you want.
that's true , but there will only be things IMPORT/EXPORT able - that can be rendered in VRAY then . Maya Fluids or Paint Effects can not be imported -exported , or Houdini L-Systems ... i guess that is very complicated when those Systems are dynamic .

    Basse:
The thing with supporting features as paintFX etc is a problem for everyone that makes a plugin for Maya.
Maybe one can learn the LIQUID for MAYA structure , to build a great VRAY-exporter (frame by frame) - i don't know why it would be imortant to have something like "a second FBX" - which can IMPORT models .

There are different BUILTs for LIQUID , such as PIXIE , Mental Ray Or BMRT . and .MI and .RIB are very different . Maybe LIQUID is good ressource for exporting into .vrmesh ???

    Paul Oblomov:
Well can't say right now what is the most and what is the least important in upcoming fR or VR for maya. Must say the only thing - I need 'em to render all the things maya can handle!
You are right ! Most important thing is to have a Version which does the BASIC rendering OPTIONS (such as Shadow / Occlusion / GI / color / reflection - passes) if you render PAINTEFFECTS AND /OR fluids , then there has to be a different Programm for treating the "particle count" or surfaceShape or however this NODe would be named . PaintEffects are translated to MayaSoftware Renderer in a second step - after Rendering the Image .

I for one likes the new "trend" that more and more renders are released on other platforms than 3dsMax.

    YES , that is a GOOD TREND !!! C --- i am just an end-user

How about testrenders? do you need to export every time while you are tuning the scene? If thats the case i prefer an integrated renderer.

Heh...not wanting to repeat my self or others....why would you need to manually export???
