  • Maya instantly crashes when creating a V-Ray material or attempting to render (Also can't post to other forums)

I was part of the V-Ray Next Beta, and I finally got around to purchasing a monthly subscription for my next project. I uninstalled the old beta, then installed the newest version (hotfix 2, Feb 27th).

As the title states, Maya is crashing immediately when I assign any V-Ray material to an object, as well as crashing instantly when hitting the render button. Example:

    1. I launch a fresh version of Maya
    2. I create a cube in an empty scene
    3a. I assign a V-Ray material
    or
3b. I click the render button
    or
3c. I open the Hypershade, and create a V-Ray material
    4. Maya crashes

I'm running Maya 2018.3, and have V-Ray loaded in my Plugin Manager, as well as set to the default renderer.

As well, I am unable to post to any other forum as well. I just bought a license yesterday, and if I lose a whole weekend of productivity... not happy

We don't have other reports about such an issue. It sounds like the installation may be corrupt in some way, and there's a few things you can try.
    1. Uninstall V-Ray
    2. Make sure there are no files form the V-Ray installation left on your machine
--> if this is Windows, then make sure there's no vray folder in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2018 and that there's no Maya 2018 for x64 folder in C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray
--> for the other operating systems, it's /usr/autodesk and /usr/ChaosGroup/ for Linux and /Applications/Autodesk and /Applications/ChaosGroup for macOS. You can check the default installation paths in our docs: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...V-Ray+for+Maya
--> if you've not installed on the default location - check the path where you installed V-Ray
    3. Install V-Ray again.

Thanks, that fixed it! Super weird, and I'm still disappointed about losing my whole weekend trying to troubleshoot this...

I'm sorry you lost all that time, but I'm glad it's fixed now.
