  • 3d motion blur with VRAY? (for helicopter blades)

    hi there!

    is it possible to do a 3d motion blur with vray? i just tried out the demo and the only thing i found was the camera blur which doesnt do the trick.

    my problem: i have a helicopter-scene here in which the blades are rotating (such a suprise!) .. . an i want these blades have a rotating blur, not a linear one .. .

    how can i achieve this?

    If you can´t get the result you are expecting to with vray, u can add some motion blur in postproduction! You can use some 2d motion blur plugins like Reelsmart Motion Blur Pro, and it´ll probably do the trick. It´s not as accurate, but it works rather well. Oh you will need some post application, like After Effects or Combustion, to install the reelsmart plugin.

    I suggest rendering just the helicopter to TGA sequence with alpha activated, and then applying the plugin to this layer only, apart from the background layer. I hope it helps!

      Yes it can. Activate motion blur in the camera rollout, and increase the geometry samples to something like 100.

              Hey that's actually a great idea v_wrangler since that's basically what increasing the samples is doing anyway. I wonder which would render faster.

                sure its a great idea! but im not sure how it might look like .. probably you will see the "extra"-blades . .. but i dunno know. .

                      There is a sample maxfile that has a helicopter animation that you could try it with.

                        If this is full speed rotors you are going to render you will be better off making a texture of the blurred rotors and rotating it at a slow speed on top of you chopper. Trying to simulate those speeds with any motion blur is just not practical, as they can easily go more than half a revolution per frame, and that would amount to a serious number of geometry samples. Though, doing it in the proper way is more fun in a icky geeky way
