  • Render Assistant idea to help avoid user error.

Ok, so having almost finished a pretty nightmarish project, lots of long days/nights etc, its all too easy for you to forget to tick/untick boxes etc that can ruin your night and render etc. For example, I was having to use the flythrough lightcache bake, running out of time to render etc, and I ticked the 'dont render final image' box. Everything looked good, set the render off at 3am, woke up, nothing...i had forgotton to untick it in my bleary eyed state......

    that sort of thing

I was wondering if it would be useful to have a way of designating key attributes in the render settings, that when you click render, a quick popup box ask if you are happy before proceeding.

I know ultimately its all down to user error, just wondering on ways to help when your eyes have stopped working

You can create presets and use those.

I used to call them Sanity Checkers.
Deadline from Thinkbox had one awesome framework Bobo wrote, that was user editable, and that provided various color codes to show the error gravity, on top of one-click fixes where applicable.
It would also refuse to submit in case of severe errors which would result in render failures.

They are, however, *very* specific: the options in V-Ray exist to be used, and inferring intention is impossible in most cases.
If the checker was to give the user an option to check for a region or not, then the user would be doing as much work as checking, and removing, the region by themselves.
Besides the fact that giving users more options to ensure they didn't make mistakes with the other set of options, seems much like circular logic.

Which is why one TD set up the sanity checks (based on previous jobs' issues), and the users had zero input on which those were: they couldn't even decide to not run them.

Based on this, i fear not much could be done on our side, particularly not something pre-canned and universal enough to cater for a larger set of cases.
