  • Planning to buy, but...

    Hi,

Here, where I work in, are planning to buy a renderer. I stongly adviced them to buy vray but they say it has too many porblems with DR. The main trouble they know about DR is that you can not kill a client machine (while used in DR rendering) and then be able to use it again in an already initialized render.
Are these problems going to be solved soon? Or if DR is a very important issue for them they should forget buying Vray?

PS: I already checked the forum and found that, indeed, there are some problems with DR.

    Thanks in advanced.

I would imagine DR will be resolved before 1.5 is released.

        Hi Bowcat,

you can kill the dr clients and use them again. Basicly you restart the vray dr client and everything is fine.
This doesnt mean there are no problems with dr (personally had some problem with shared plugin folders), but for a lot of ppl it is good enough.

Question would be what other choices you have for DR - especially at that price point (which is zero for up to 10 Machines)
AfaIk, Mental Ray has no DR clients included in the default max licenses, and additional licenses come expensive.

Maybe you can mail vlado for a full time-limited trial version - once read that one exists and can be requested.

        cya,

        Mike
ps: havent used DR in production, but it was working fine for us with the five machines we tried.

Oh, so you can? hmm... I heard you couldnĀ“t. Are you sure about that?

Yeah, for MR it is an extra 1k for each client PC. too much.

But my boss says itĀ“s better to invest in something that actually works and you can rely on.

I guess he is right, but I just love Vray

          Thanks

psservice can restart remote services (the vray dr client can be installed as a service)

pskill would be able to kill the remote process (if you run the client as a task)
            psexec would start them again

takes some time to load up max on the remote machine (the client does this), but it works
(i've made a batch file for restarting the whole farm using these tools)

i'd suggest asking vlado for the trial that includes DR, esp if you are going to rely on that feature this much

im not entirely sure your right. i dont think you can kill the DR then restart it and have it jump in on a render already in progress. we used to be able to do that way back. but i dont think its possible now. i could easily be wrong though

oh, if Bowcat was asking for something like that i got him wrong...
does mr distributed rendering handle it this way? cant imagine that...

Yes, this is what I ment. So...it canĀ“t be done then.

As far as I know, MR does handle this thing. Aparently it is very usefull when you have people working on client PCs during day, and at night those clients start rendering qued work with DR.[/code]

our older version of DR used to be able to do it. we had a DR manager window in which we could connect or disconnect the DR slaves
