  • How to make these kinds of images / materials / fabrics / stitched in text ?

I need to make images like these ones attached.

Any ideas how to make these, and what software / plugins I might have to employ ?

I'm particularly concerned about the fibres of the dark fabric and the stitched-in-text on the other one.

Needs to look photo-real and not CGI.

Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,

1st Make and unwrap geo and use substance painter, you can use text mask with some warp filter to give it more organic look so edges do not look sharp, you can even try to make black and white mask from actual stitched lettering in photoshop, same goes for stitching, you can give different materials different displace level and even export tessellated geometry from substance, that way it will look embossed without displace. It really depends on how familiar are you with substance but shouldn't be that hard to create image on the right.

Export textures, use displace for rendering. If final resolution you require needs to be some very high-res, you can use multi uvw tiles (udim) just bear in mind that there are no cross tile painting in substance.

Regarding dark fabric, same process as above for base, you can use ornatrix (which would be ideal) for that subtle pulled fibers with vray hair material for fibers, you can alternatively use forest pack to scatter pre-made fibers. You can even try hair and fur from max.

2nd approach would be to do this in zbrush/modo or any other sculpting program, give rough details to the geometry (text or any other irregularities), bake maps and create color id maps (for letters, stitching etc.), well there are infinite number of options it all depends on budget and time involved.

3rd approach is to use few stitch scripts that are available and make all as geo, which doesn't look nice for closeups, since it is too rigid, it simply has it's limitations and it won't look organic. Should be used only if you are not familiar with other options, even then i would choose photoshop texturing over it.

    Take care,
    Ivan
