  • Export Phoenix FD Velocity data as a map channel on the mesh/voxels?

    Hi.

I'm trying to render some heat haze to a jet engine using a phoenix fd smoke sim rendered in mesh mode, using phoenix 3.00.01 and redshift, but redshift doesn't currently support deformation blur for the phoenix sim so I was told that it might work if it's possible to save out the velocity as a channel and be loaded as shown in the pic below. Is this possible some how? I also have access to 3.04.00, but will have to use 3.00.01 for final rendering. Thanks.

Wow, you are using some very old Phoenix versions! 3.00.01 came out 4 years ago and during that time we changed a ton of stuff.

    1. I would suggest exporting VDB caches from Phoenix and loading them into Redshift using these steps: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...eswithRedshift

    2. Or alternatively, you could export Alembic, including vertex velocities, like this: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...cachetoAlembic

... but using such old versions you might run into issues that were long fixed now.

For (1) you would need at least Phoenix 3.00.02: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/PHX4MAX/3.00.02

... while for (2) you would need at least Phoenix 3.13: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/PHX4MAX/3.13.00

Note that if you have Phoenix 3, both are free updates.

    Cheers!

      Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yeah, this version is the one I'm stuck with for now. I do have a copy of 3.04.00 installed on another max that I use to export .VDBs when needed. However, this time I need the sim to be loaded as mesh in order to apply a refractive material to it, so I'm just rendering the .AURs using the phoenix fire/smoke simulator object in mesh mode. I'm on max 2014 so don't think alembic will help unfortunately. Guess I'll have to wait for phoenix deformation blur to be supported in Redshift, which it luckily seems like they added just yesterday after I requested it / submitted it as a bug. We will see how that goes.. Thanks again.
