  • Art VPS - Inacurate Vray comparason?

    http://www.artvps.com/comparisons.ihtml?groupid=2

For the DOF, do you think they used Vray's DOF or Max's DOF?

Also, I never use a skylight with my renders, i use sky color and a sun, I could have sworn trying to do raytrace skylight+vray was insane and stupid. I just dont feel they are representing Vray acurately.

Yeah, they have made some pretty shaky comparisions in the past...

Thier renders don't even look like they have secondary bounces, and no telling how many samples they used or even like you said what DOF...

If the have any balls they'll let us have the scene to try ourselves

I also hear the " raytracing" chips they use are based on old tech. I get the feeling a Dual-Core 64bit Dual CPU board would probably match up. And be hell... maybe a bit less expensive. Chip + Chip + Board is probably $2+K american. But thats going to be usefull for the WHOLE computer so I think its a better investment.

just for fun I build up a similar scene, added skylight, DOF and hit render...
It's not really optimised, uses qmc fr primary and no secondary bounces. Still quite grainy but you can't judge that from the thumbs on their site anyway.

rendertime was 24:50min. forgot to turn on the stamp, so you gotta believe me

        or the full size render:

system is a dual 3.4 xeon here with 2gb ram

Hm, so youre base system i think is about the same as theirs. Yet, your render time is ~1/8 their render time.

I think even WITH some additional detail yours would still do better.

So, Im guessing they used light-tracer to fool people into thinking that Vray is slow?

I think they used vray free...which would be significantly slower

So theyre comparing the Render time of an overpriced piece of hardware, to a free piece of software...

... Anything legal someone could pull to have them either remove that comparason or make CLEAR what they are using?

                Nice test Sushidelic

free doesn't have dof, does it?

Now for a good test, we could take the money for a render drive, over $12,000 US :P

...build 5 or 6 dual xeons with the money and render it with DR, should be somewhere around 4 mins...

My *i hope* next computer will be a Dual-DualCore 64bit setup with 4 gigs of ram *16 gigs if I had enough money* I dont know if Ill do Pentium or AMD, Im still waiting for the money. I feel my investment in 2 processors would be a better investment in render-specific raytrace cards that dont guarentee any compatability with any render plugins I use for 3dsmax.

Also, 2 Dual Core 64 bit processors can come in handy with things OTHER than 3d rendering, like 3d Gaming >:B

I wonder if that setup could pull a realtime AO in conjunction with the next gen Video cards.

If any of you have seen the PS3 in action, you already notice it supports per pixel HDRI and SSS volumetric effects... I can only expect that to appear on the next VideoCard from Nvidia.

Mmmmm... 9 core processor + Vray + Nvidia w/SSS Volumetrics HDRI = Sexy

OOh... i wonder if you could do realtime HDRI tests in the viewport before final renders!

                  The future is exciting, no?

But um, back on subject. Originaly I had convinced my boss we should DEFFINATELY Get one of those render cards, but then I realised how much of a ripoff it was when I noticed render times posted on the net by Vray users. and now i REALY Know its a ripoff after looking back at these benchmarks. They need to say The Vray Version and the Settings and then make a comparason. This general " oh look, we went faster than Vray LOLZ" thing is just a lie.

As said it is now old raytracing chip tech ... use 16 AMD Opterons in one box and im sure it would kick ass !! ive used one and there not that great that they would warrant £15,000

Actually they may have easily used Vray but turned on QMC very high, use simple rate AA turned up to 5, turned all off all the QMC accel... any one of these or all of them could have done it.

Kinda hard to tell since they dont post any specifics or the high renders they claimed to have done.

feel free to optimise, it was really a 5min job

Da_elf, have you done a render to compare with the site's render times yet?
