  • Enough of these bloody updates

Honestly, it’s getting difficult to work with v-ray.
it might be the fourth update and change of interface I have to learn about since I started working with V-ray.
the software is already expensive enough and you guys don’t bloody stop changing the interface. I have no time to go and learn about changes in tutorials or whatever.
CAN YOU PLEASE STOP MAKING MY LIFE BLODDY DIFFICULT??

  • #2
Lol seriously... Any changes that are made, is to make your life easier. Software evolves, if you don't like that, no one forces you to update.

Can you specify which update are you referring to and also the specific changes bothering you?

There has not been a substantial UI change since V-Ray 3.
The user interface of V-Ray Next and V5 are pretty similar - some improvements have been made of course.
In general there is no problem for you to stay on an older version of V-Ray and upgrade when you have time to get familiar with the new features and take advantage of them.
Our goal when updating the software has always been to make your life easier and expand the V-Ray toolset.

I also want to note that only the major version updates are paid (For over 7 years there have only been 3 major updates - V-Ray 3, 4 and 5).
All the in-between update and hotfix versions are free for existing users.

I'm sorry for your negative experience with our products.
If you have other suggestions on how we can improve, please let us know.

      Regrads,
      Konstantin

I apologise for my tone on the previous message. That express a lot my frustration and not very helpful in terms of improving the software based on our feedback.

As I previously mentioned, I work with v-ray for a while.
The change on the interface of the software mainly on frame buffer didn’t allow me to work properly for hours until I figured out how to use it. I didn’t find the alterations intuitive and also lacks adequate information on the website, forum or video tutorials.

I have been using Vray for about a decade and yes, it has changed, but always great improvements. I understand your frustrations, but I think you would be equally frustrated if you didn't see the Chaos team working hard to update their software to meet our needs. Almost everything has become easier to use in V-Ray.

I got stuck for about half an hour the other day when I accidentally pressed "e" in the vfb without realizing and couldn't get rid of the lines it brought up. That stressed me out....but otherwise Id say Vray next and 5 are very different in terms of the VFB, huge changes, but Id say mostly for the good. Please allow us to bake in VFB cc's into passes, but otherwise its all very good steps in the right direction.

              Ah! this helps.
One can revert to the old Frame Buffer by setting a system environment variable.

              VRAY_VFB2_ENABLED=0

              and then reboot.
Be wary of the fact that the old VFB will go away soon, as the powerful new features of the new VFB were simply not possible with it (it is, indeed, the very reason why we made the effort to code a radically new one.).
In Maya, f.e., the variable has no effect anymore, so you'll have to test it against your version of V-Ray.

Thank you all for your comments.
I do appreciate updates are made to improve the quality of the software, but I seem to be really struggling with the V-ray 5.
I have attached a few images of my recent project I am rendering.
OMG, the quality looks like "The Sims".
All my settings are good quality, denoise on... I don't understand why it does not look realistic at all.

                Help please =/

I tried 3 times not to respond to this post but I could not let it go. V-Ray is created by some pretty brilliant people and feel free to change it as often as you like. One thing that is consistent in this world is that "nothing stays the same." If you don't feel like adapting, you won't survive. I can't write any useful code, much less the bizallion lines that makes V-Ray one of the best things to happen to the 3D world. V-Ray gurus, keep doing your thing. I can't speak for everyone obviously, but from my perspective, even if I have to change my workflow a bit now and again, I for one am so grateful for everything you give us.

Pack a scene (or a representative piece of it) for both the old result and the new.
Send a mail to support@chaosgroup.com explaining the issue with the results, and attach both scenes, and some representative image.
The more information you'll give (DCC app, version you updated from and to, etc.) and the more precisely you'll explain what it is you're trying to achieve (either visually, attaching images, or in words.), the easier will be for them to help you out.

As others pointed out, though, Support will let you know a new bit of information (f.e. how to make it look like you wanted), and unless you'll want to repeat the ordeal the next time, you'll have to learn it.
The production of imagery is but the tip of the iceberg in CGI.
The most time is (and it better be) spent updating one's knowledge.
What's left, is likely spent cooling down from the innumerable frustrations that pit our grassy fields: no need to be sorry, we've all been there a few times, the forum is testament to each of those, eheh.

Leave everything at its default. When you say "All my settings are good quality", that implies you tweaked them. Reset your renderer and back to V-Ray and leave all the setting alone.

You don't seem to use reflection at all. Everything needs reflection. A common approach is to turn all reflection colors to white and tweak the reflection glossiness till it looks as close to the material you're after as you can get it. (use reference) If need be drop the reflection color to some grey value.
That should already help a lot.

THIS. I barely touch anything in Vray now once Ive set my resolution, and a couple of tick boxes....God, the hours spent in previous versions noodling with noise and GI settings. You should be glad for the progress! More time spent making shots look cool!
