  • Vray 5 and Forest Pack rendering issue

    Hello everyone,

I have using Vray 3.8 for the past few years so I'm late to the Vray 5 scene. I just upgraded to Vray 5 and I found rendering performance issues. I primarily use Max 2019 and FP 7. When i opened one of my current job files that I have been working on for the past few weeks and attempted to do a low quality test rendering. The LC pass was extremely slow. It would start and stop and the progress was so painfully slow, i had to cancel the rendering. I had a theory what the issue could be so I created a test scene with 3 types of scenarios. I was not sure if this was FP related or Vray related. At first I thought it could be how Vray 5 handled older proxy objects created in Vray 3.8. I also created new proxy objects in Vray 5. The test file is available for download - see link below and I could use some feedback. I sent this file to the Itoo and they were not able to recreate the problem. If you would like to give this a try, please set the rendering type to bucket mode and share you render times:. I still think it has to do with proxy objects because when I turned on the FP layer using the raw models and not the proxy objects, it rendered just fine. No performance issues.

I rein-installed Vray 3.8 to see what would happen and it also preformed just fine with the proxy objects. So at this point, Vray 5 is completely useless to me so I'm hoping someone has a solution.

Test Scene Rendering Time with Vray 3 proxy objects turned on:
    Vray 5 rendering time: 22:12
    Vray 3.8 rendering time: 2:23

I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

    Thank you,
    Scott.

For what it's worth, I tried your test scene - setting to Bucket rendering, with my (now relatively old) i9-7980xe, and I got 9m 57s.

As I've recently upgraded my GPUs (and try mainly to use GPU rendering as my default), I tried GPU rendering and the same scene, same noise settings, and it rendered in 1m 35s...

Thanks Jez for the feedback. I still can't figure out when I render the FP layer with the actual 3 models and not the proxy objects, it renders just fine. It's only when I render the proxy objects it comes to a crawl. I'm not sure if this is a Max thing, I'm still on 2019. Perhaps I will try a test with 2021, otherwise this is an isolated issue and that makes it even more frustrating and not fixable. As I said in my previous thread, I went back to Vray 3.8 and FP 6 and all is good. I will continue my trouble shooting efforts.

      Thanks again,

      Scott.

Out of curiosity: what version 3.8 are you talking about? Latest official version for 3dsMax i know of is 3.70.01 !!

Sorry about that......you are correct. It is 3.7. I have been in communication with support from Chaos and the team at Itoo. After getting feedback from both teams, it appears the issue was an outdated Color Correct Plugin. I reinstalled Vray 5, FP 7 and I updated the CC plugin. Rendering has returned to normal.

          Thanks......Scott
