I'll be transient for a while, and I need to keep the business wheels moving. Is there a new breed of laptop that can be a desktop replacement, at least to hold me over? I have been looking at the Acer Concept D's and the Alienware 51. Anything else that I should consider.

I like the ASUS Strix 17 with Ryzen 9 and RTX 3080. Not exactly like YOUR desktop, but in the top performing laptops I'd say in price vs performance

So, these three might be contenders?

I think I have looked at them every time I have looked, however, they have always been a lot more expensive.

The Asus one with Ryzen CPU is great, you can look up the CPU models on the Benchmark page.
The 5900HX beats everything else, could try and get the Quad HD monitor instead of the high FPS one, and I would avoid Dell personally

I'm satisfied with my HP ZBook 17 G5 Mobile Workstation. Actually it seems to be faster with PhoenixFD simulations than my main Workstation HP Z640.

Isn't that a gaming laptop? Is there a particular reason to purchase that instead of mobile workstation? For me, there's some significance with the seller too. When buying a workstation I go into a shop that sells the workstations to big companies. I ask them to suggest the computer for me. Usually they contact their suppliers to get the latest information. If I bought a gaming laptop, I'd go to home appliance store where I find the computers next to vacuum cleaners.

By the way, I tested that few years ago with the most reputable home appliance store in our country at their flagship store. I took a queuing number and waited for my turn to get service. They laughed at me very loud, when I introduced my list of requirements for my next computer.

This "workstation" laptop might have been the bees knees when it came out and I'm sure it's still a nice workhorse, but that new Asus will wipe the floor with it.

I've done fair bit of research looking at the gaming laptops recently. Unfortunately still did not get one but from what I've seen around, I'd personally go for Lenovo Legion 7 with RTX 3080 with 16GB Vram (130w version which is pretty much highest watt 3080 version) and 5900h / hx (very little difference between those two cpus).
It has solid build quality, qhd 160hz display which a nice sweet spot IMO.

There are very few rtx 3080 laptops with 16gb of vram. Here is very handy list of best performance laptops.
                      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Compre....517977.0.html

If not Lenovo, I'd go for Aero 15 which has superior display and build quality but lower performance and no 16gb vram rtx 3080.
I own Aero 15 with gtx 1060 and I love this machine despite its overheating issues. Newer models might have improved it a lot mind you.

Personally I would avoid brands such as Acer and HP, 300hz refresh rate screens and keep in mind many gaming laptops does not support 64gb of ram. For example Asus g15 has one ram stick soldered and is limited to something like 38gb

Let us know what you pick. Goodluck finding one in stock too!

I keep buying these MacBook Pros, but I can honestly say, that they are glorified Chromebooks. I have the M1 MBP and the M1 MAX are out. Isn't a major Blender being released? Doesn't Blender work on the MacBooks? I know SketchUp does. What is the future? Would a new 16" MBP M1 MAX and Blender be a direction to consider? Or, of course, wait for the M2 Pro.

Not perfect. but I can get it before the new year. I am moving, so my workstation will be backed up for a month and I need to keep working.

I still cannot understand the reason to buy consumer products for serious work. What comes to this Dell in question, I could not find a localized version of the to be able to compare the pricing.

Anyway, when I see clients, everyone around the conference room tables do have mobile workstations. It would reduce my credibility if I'd attend the meeting with a laptop purchased from a vacuum cleaner store. I recall one news clip from the White House situation room. Everyone around that table had the very same laptop than I use everywhere. I was delighted to notice, they have made the same decisions with laptop choice.

I live in upper MN, so no local shop. Do they even make 3rd party laptops?
