  • Threadripper pro WX3995X vs INTEL CORE I9 12900K 12TH gen

    Hi,

currently I have a couple of INTEL CORE I9 12900K 12TH gen with single and double GPUs in

I mainly do single renders but need to do a animation, currently each frame is apprx 14mins to render on either CPU

If I was to buy a Threadripper pro WX3995X, with basic GPU what is a realistic render time I can expect?

Is this the best option taking into account electricity and exanding to more if required?

I personally have non pro threadripper 3990x, 64 core 128 thread. I think its a great cpu. While I don't have i9 12th gen, I do have some i9's 9980xe. It is about twice as fast in rendering as those are, and I run it at stock clock speeds (2.8 Ghz) You have to be aware that threadripper is not your average intel cpu. It needs a high end motherboard, serious cooling and a high Ghz capable ram, its recomended to have 3000Mhz or higher ram modules for it, and even then it might have stability issues.
Overall if you do things right it runs great and can really rock the renders. With that said these cpus are high in demand and also can cost quite a bit, I saw one for sale for almost $10k usd.

cheers, we ordered a threadripper today so will see how it goes, we are finding the i9s really fast also but just managing a bank of them might be more work than we need... hopefully it should be good.

Do people still use backburner to manage workflow or is this very old hat? been a while since I have done animations! been looking into vray cloud render but some people have said backburner is still good option for stacking renders?

I can recommend Royal Render, but there is also Deadline which is very popular. I don't know if Backburner is still a good solution...

We use backburner 2019 with max2022 and fusion studio 17, runs fine

While Deadline itself is great, and Thinkbox software was great. AWS Thinkbox is NOT great. Since Amazon bought Thinkbox they have pretty much abandoned all their other software in order to push Deadline and cloud rendering on AWS. Krakatoa and Frost, etc. are darn near abandonware at this point. We got sick of paying "support" for literally ZERO updates.

I have no faith in AWS Thinkbox at this point. Once AWS decides that Deadline is not profitable for cloud rendering, or decides to shift tacks it will likely be abandoned like their other projects. I have trouble supporting a company that just dumps their truly awesome products because of some bean counters.

You are probably right since they've now announced all Thinkbox tools are free.

Yeah, I am worried about the future, there. Though we have been using Deadline for a little while, now.

Still, not good to have your tools owned by big tech.
