  • Can't render high rest with low Displacement Edge Length

    Hi there,

I have a very simple file, which is basically 1 plane, with a displacement map applied to it. The artwork is pretty detailed so I need to set my edge length to 1. The final render is also pretty large as it will go on a huge truck, about 32,000 x 8,000.

My lo-res renders look great, the moment I up the resolution, it just doesn't render. I even tried to split it up and render in regions but same issue.

Is there a way I can make it render without my ram becoming an issue and stopping it? I have 128 gb of ram so I'm not sure why its not working or how i can make it work.

I have a tight deadline for my client, any help would be greatly appreciated! The file is also under NDA, I do have permission to share share it though with the chaos team if needed only if its through a private/safe link.

    Thanks so much!!

1-Try to pre-subdivide the plane in square of 10x10cm, then lower the maximum displacement subdivision to 20. This should be enough to capture all the details without wasting resources in unneeded subdivision.
2-Since it’s just a plane try the 2D mode and up the res of the texture until you get good detail and still fits in the computer RAM.
3-There’s absolutely no need for such a resolution for the final render, no way you can see the detail while the truck is in movement and even when parked I’m sure people won’t see it close enough to appreciate the difference. So just render something like 12/16.000 pixel image and it will be more than enough, then if you want to be picky use an AI resampling tool (even the one in PS) to upscale to 32000 pixel, anything other than this will be a waste of time/resources, no matter what graphic shops “experts” tell you.
