  • AA Filters or Sharpen in Photoshop

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing the sharpening in Photoshop? I assume it would save on rendering time to do this, but this was also for older VRay versions.

    TIA

Avoid changing filtering in the render settings if you can.
The default one provides for good filtering, and it's sharp without having negative componenents (like sharpening filters in general.).
It's also very fast to calculate, and will add little to your rendertimes.
Sharpening filters by design need a broader kernel, so that already will cost memory and time, and the sharpening they produce doesn't help with convergence (so, they render for much longer.).
These days the VFB has a sharpen/blur layer, so you can use that instead, should you not have PS.

Main disadvantage is that any sharpening/effect you do in the frame buffer will be irreversible in post once you save the rendering. I once sharpened via frame buffer, saved the rendering as rbg and then I got weird edges when using alpha masks or wirecolor in post production (photoshop). I would avoid doing any of that in vray framebuffer and instead make it one of your final steps in post production, for example by copying the entire image, use a high pass filter on it and set it to overlay.

If you have history active, you can always go back to the rendered image and make any changes you'd like.
