  • Everything to do with network rendering

Hi, I have a few questions regarding network rendering and vray. I have one liscence of 3d max, and am considering buying vray in the next month or two, and setup a render farm with about 5 pc's. The questions I have are:
    1. What systems does vray best perform on. Is it dual Intel Xeons or Opterons? (I am looking at building about 4 1U rackmount rendernodes, and want it specifically for rendering with vray) It seems there is a leaning towards dual xeon systems here, and was just wondering if vray performed faster on xeons than opterons? Also what is dual core, that eveyone is talking about?

    2. What is the difference between network rendering & distributed rendering?

    3. If I had my main workstation with an authorized version of 3d max and vray on it, could I send out jobs to be rendered from that computer and still be able to work on new scenes while the other projects rendered on the servers?

    4. Is it really difficult to setup and manage a render farm? I would probably get someone in to get everything networked properly, as I'm not too knowledgable on networking, but once everything is setup, is it hard to keep everything running smoothly?

    5. Are there any major bugs when doing network/distributed rendering?

    6. To setup the renderfarm, do I just follow the instructions from the 3d max manual, and then install a version of vray on every machine, because it says it is only designed for scanline renderer?

    7. Once you have installed and authourized vray on a computer, can you uninstall it off that machine and put it on a new one, should you decide to upgrade later, and maybe use the old computer that it was on as a render server?

    8. If you were building a render farm to do architectural flythrough's at PAL DV resolution approx how many render servers would you get to process the job in a reasonable timeframe (about 1 week), with the animations lasting about 2-3 mins? Also would you recommend using the 1U rackmount servers for rendering, or full PC cases? Do the 1U's get very hot because they are so compact? Would I even need to put in a graphics card in each server, or would an onboard 8mb graphics be ok?

    9. Finally, would you use the main 3d workstation to manage the jobs, or one of the servers? Also, can network rendering be used to calculate irradiance maps, or can only 1 pc do that?

Phew thats quite a lot to ask, but if anyone here has any info on these questions I'd really appreciate your comments. Just need to know if I'm making the right choice in choosing Vray as my renderer of choice for architectural viz. One last thing, do you get some sort of manual when you purchase vray, or is all the help available only on these forums?

    Thanks for listening

    Hi,

I'm also fairly new to vray, have 1 license and am looking to buy more and create a renderfarm. I know it's time consuming to search through the forum for answers to your questons, but in the last couple of weeks I have seen most of the questions you've asked in various places here. Check out this thread for a downloadable manual:

    enjoy.

price vs performance ratio of opterons is better than xeons.

the dual core opterons is two cores on one die. there is HEAPS of information out there regarding them:
