  • Masking Bump maps

    Hi Guys,

I'm making a simple brick wall that has some plastered areas over it.

    1. The first image is of my composite bump (B&W map masked w/ noise) plugged into the diffuse for show. Seems to look like it may work.

    2. However, the second image is the bump plugged into the bump which completely disregards the mask.

So, in my case, I don't want there to be grout lines where the plaster is and I'm not sure how to achieve this?

    Anyway, appreciate any help! Thanks,

You'll need a second layer in the composite for whatever is the underlying texture, then the mask will reveal that

Thanks for the quick reply, but I'm not quite understanding still...! I added the underlying texture to the 2nd layer, (I think what this is what you mean? But I'm not sure) but the bump still comes thru. I've attached what I'm getting along with the tree.

I deleted the output map just before the bump composite. Everything else is the same

That looks a bit odd to me tbh. You seem to have the brick in both layers of the bump with the noise as a mask.
In a simple way it could look like the attached.

I had to put a solid white color in layer 2 and mask it with my grout being the base. Probably wouldn't of figured that out without your example! Thanks!

No problem. Depending on what you need to happen the shader could be a LOT more complex/confusing, so it can be easy to become lost in it.
At least now you know the general approach
