  • Newbie:Help with Mapping/Lighting an LCD Screen

    Hi All,

I am new to Vray and 3ds Max and am slowly getting used to it. Currently i am modelling a product with an LCD screen. I have spent days looking for tutorials on how to map a COLOUR lcd screen but have been unsuccessful and to the point of frustration. Can any one help me out or point me to where i can find it. I am able to do the the below method but it only produces mono color screen renders.

    Display LCD

    Create a Blend material.
In the upper slot insert a simple black VrayMtl
In the lower slot insert a VrayMtlWrapper and set the Generate GI to 5.
Insert a standard max mat in the Base material slot.
For this mat set the Ambient, Diffuse and Self-illumination color to 211,99,0 (RGB)
Now in the Mask slot of the Blend material insert a bitmap b/w image for the LCD text.

    Thanks,

    Togusa

As far As I can get the explanation of the TUT You have found, there is nothing wrong with it... I think You just found a wrong TUT...

That material, which is explained there looks like a TUT for producing LCD text material << as it is said - put in the Mask slot the text etc. >>
just like an LCD watch or something similar... if you have there a screen-grab shot - it is absolutely expectable that it would render MONO
(quite Orange actually - as RGB (211,99,0) is a orange color)

This material can be used for making let's say a car interior with all the lighting tables there and so on... there is that color (orange) used in lots of
cars... like the old green and so on...

Otherwise for producing an LCD effect -

the fast and easiest way is to use the VRayLightMtl with the screen-grab shot put in the Texmap Slot... and let's say multiplier 1.0 - 2.0, of course it all depends.

            Thanks Nikki.

What you suggested was actually the first thing i tried. I have since figured it out. I am not sure why but the bprep face i imported from Rhino 3d does not seem to render whatever map i gave it. So when you suggested to use the textmap slot on the vraylightmtl i went back and tried again with a standard max box and it worked. THanks again.
