  • Vray Displacement Mod: Tiling and preview

I have a displacement modifer on a curved suface -(using 2d). For one, I cant preview it in the viewport which is a problem since I am trying to place it at an exact location on the surface. Since its on a curved surface, I have to precisely rotate the mapping gizmo so the displaced height is uniform and is aligned to the average of the group of polygons normals. (imagine displacing a the letter 'P' on the upper part of a sphere, you would have to rotate the gizmo).

The second thing is it seems that even if tiling is off and set to 1, I still get tiling of the displacement map on my surface. I have to actually make a huge map that covers the whole surface, even though the area I am displacing is just a small part of that. I am using 1.45 and Max 7.

    any ideas? thanks

For most precise - use Unwrap...

Its easiest to just instance the map into a material channel you're not using, (say, RGlossiness... or anything) and uncheck it, and set it to show in viewport.

then you can do it easy..

even with unwrap I still cant preview it and I need to place it. What I mean by upper part of a sphere is not the top, not the side, but like a 45 degree vevtor from the center, which is why I need to preview it, so I can rotate the mapping gizmo by eye.....

Oh also, dont forget about the normal align tool in uvw map.. that'll get you most of the way there, then you can adjust it by hand
