Yeah the portfolio which got me my first job was built from 1.06 or slightly earlier. Before that radiosity was the next big thing.

I didn't get my job from it but at the time the firm I was at was too damn cheap to actual buy vray advanced so I was "stuck" on the 1.09 free version. Even that though was tons better than anything available to me at the time (on viz 3.0 I think so no MR, no radiosity). The only real alternative in our office was Accurender which was showing its age and was painfully slow by comparison.

I learned on vray free and did a lot of really nice renderings with it - probably to my detriment because at the time I couldn't convince them of a need to pay for the full version. I left that place and started on my own and the first thing I did was buy a copy of VIZ and VRay. I'm 100% positive that I purchased vray advanced because of the great experience I had with vray free. If vray free wasn't out there I know I would have definitely considered other rendering engines as alternatives. Yeah, there's other "free" versions of other engines but they really limited what you could do - primarily in terms of resolution which limited it to pretty much just playing around.

Personally, I think Chaos should update the free version (is it still available?) to include some of the newer features and support the latest max releases. I'm not sure where to draw the line though on making it too nice (e.g., do you include light cache?) but for me it was a great intro to actually using vray rather than just playing with it via the "demo" versions.

i totally agree with Dlparisi, its time for Chaos to take next step, it will make lot of
new 3d artists to use vray, then vray maybe will become monopoly render engine i think it has capacity for that

We are planning to update the free version; it's a bit tricky to find the right set of features for it though.

why would you need the free version updated if you have already purchased the educational version?
