  • GeForce GTX295 4GB vs Quadro FX 5800

Which of these cards will be better for V-Ray? If we could get two GTX295s or one FX5800 which should we get?

I am writing the specification for a machine to be used with V-Ray.

Also, how can I get this question put in the main forum? Although I personally do not use V-Ray, I am asking the question on behalf of paying customers!

only registered vray users can post in the main forums, you should be asking them to write to the forum's administrator and have their accounts upgraded.

as long as graphic cards go, I'd say either of them. vray doesn't make any use of the gpu, not yet at least, so which one you pick up won't make any difference.

For access to the main forum, please email us to vray@chaosgroup.com; for the graphics card, at present V-Ray does not use them for rendering; but in general cards with more multiprocessors are better. It looks like the 295 cards have 2x30 multiprocessors, whereas Quadro FX5800 has 30. It would be best to check the specifications of the particular cards though.

      Best regards,

Well that answers my question so I probably don't need to post in the main forum. I am guessing they have full accounts already, but I thought it might be easier this way.

            I have a new question....

The machine will be used for 3DSMax and V-Ray, and I was going to specify a quad core i7 and two GTX295s, but now I'm wondering if I should change that for two quad core Xeon X5365and one or two GTX 295s, to improve V-Ray performance?

One issue with the Xeons is that the Xeon boards I have seen will not take DDR3 though, is this likely to pose a problem, and will the extra 4 cores from the second processor offset this?
