  • 8bit EXR - possible ?

    Hi folks,
it is possible to make 8bit EXR from other 8bit formats ( like jpg.. ) ? I can save to EXR only if it is in 16/32bit range.

if it`s possible, then it would be great to use tile-ability with mipmaps for 8bit textures without redundant data ( if 8bit palette is enough )

Only exr, hdr and tiff for floating point unfortunately - I don't think there's an 8 bit version since if you made any major exposure / colour correction you'd start to get really bad banding in the images. Here's a page that has a few more details - http://www.hdrsoft.com/resources/dri.html

thanks, jconell, it seems that the vray support of tile-able exr is quite useless for largescale textures, for example making 32/16bit 20k X 20k px texture is overkill

or is there another workaround how to use large bitmaps like in mr .map format ?

It is enough to simply turn on the bitmap pager in 3ds Max - it will automaticallly take care of splitting large textures to chunks and paging them out to disk. This works regardless of the texture file format.
