Is there any documentation on the correct use of the volumetric V-ray nodes in maya?

Do they connect to a light? to a material?

I cant seem to get any real output from them and the 3DSmax documentation does not seem to cross over to maya very well.

    thanks!

You put them in the volumetric slot of a shading group; which nodes are you interested in particular?

I guess both the scatter fog and simple fog... mostly just exploring the possibilities.

If I connect it to the volume slot on the SG, what material type should be connected?

It doesn't matter so long as the material is transparent/refractive, so that you can see inside it.

You can also attach a volume shader globally in the environment section of the V-Ray settings.

One thing about the scatter fog: you may need to turn on its "environment fog" option to make it calculate lighting from direct lights.

could you outline this and maybe make one of your small tutorials on this in the online docs?

Yep, I will try to put something together.

I tried to get this working in a spot light. but can't.
if this is possibel could somebody please explain it.

                cheers

                  Hi,

I was playing around with this stuff and I want to resurrect this thread. Using nightly 10787 and I've made some progress, but no matter what I pipe into scatterFog or simpleFog (emission, color or color mult) it won't work. I've tried creating textures from V-Ray plug-in, too. If I plug in a default ramp, it is affected, but only by the first color of the ramp, but that's all. The circle is using simple and the square scatter. I've been reading over the docs here. Has anyone made more progress than this?

What kind of result to you want to get from this in the end? The VolumeFog and VolumeScatterFog do not support volumetric textures at present. We are working on porting the VRayEnvironmentFog over from 3ds Max, but that will be another volumetric shader.

                    Best regards,
                    Vlado

I was doing some testing to see what sort of looks I could achieve with the fog, like mapping in some simple noise, trying both 2d and 3d textures. I thought I might have been incorrectly connecting things, but now I know this stuff isn't implemented yet. Looking forward to VRayEnvironmentFog, or support for volumetric textures. Thanks,

                      Jens
