  • Problems with Hair or Fur

    Hello

i tried to post this thread in another Forum, but it didn't work, so I give it a try here. We are in production for a full-CG short in Maya an decided to use Vray for Maya as renderer.
A current big topic is creating Fur or Hair with it. I couldn't figure out a way to create it with Vray for Maya. Has anybody had the same Problem and found a work around?
I realised that Maya Hair and Fur are not yet supported by Vray for Maya, as well as Shave and Haircut. I tried Paint Effects by converting them to Polys, but it's supposed to loook quite ugly and seems to be to slow in Rendering. Has anybody any other idea or any news about new releases.
We are still using the Beta-Version, so there is maybe a nwe implementaion?
Maybe somebody had the same problem and tried to render Hair/Fur with MR or Renderman. So I would be glad to get some information about the Compostiting. Did it work well with Motion Vectors?

The only think i found that works is to convert the shave hair to geometry. Very heavy, but will render out nice and opens up a lot of options for shaders heh.

      I have the same "problem"...
I'm working with interiors and somtimes I need to create this "furry" carpets.
Sure, I can play around with displacement, but I wont get the same nice result as I want...
I have seen very nice results using Max with Vray fur...

So I wonder if Vray fur coming to Maya aswell?

Right now I'm using this technique to achieve a decent looking "furry" carpet:
      (Just for still image...)

      1st:
Render out the whole scene with all the materials in Vray, set the colour on the carpet to whatever colour you want, make it matte or "lambert".

      2nd:
Change renderer to the bulit in Mentalray (if thats legal to mention in here ) Apply the wanted Maya fur settings to the carpet, choose colour, set up about the same light settings in Mentalray.
Make every object except the carpet "lambert" matte white, (Like an AO pass, to speed up the rendering)
Render it out and use your talent in photoshop

Works pretty fine for me, but a little more time consuming though...
Would be very easy with a Fur tool for Maya
