Forgetting the price-point at the moment, your comment about Mental Ray is a tad unreasonable given their record. MR, for a good 5 years, have played catch-up with VRay. IMO the only thing they tried and succeeded at was the Arch+Design material. The MR Proxies are unstable and are absolutely not suitable for anything nearing what VRayScatter+VRProxies can do, and the GI methods are still tedious at best.

Good luck with MR, but I think you'll find even the next iteration to be "nifty" but busted.

Tell me an easier renderer on the 3dsmax platform. And still, in all your posts on this topic you dismissed the economic aspects I tried to communicate.

@duke: In terms of (mostly) of usability (but also other areas), you are absolutely right. But don't forget that mray is included in max.

What would you suppose students should do?
Just for the record...commercial max is $3,495.00 (and a lot more expensive in many countries like most around Europe).

Tbh if mental ray was good enough, everyone would use it and not bother paying the cash for vray - vray is far superior in so many ways it's a big factor in getting a job since you've effectively got an entire industry based around it - learn to use it well and you've a pretty good "in" to the arch vis market. You're basically investing in yourself. It's in autodesks interest to get their programs into as many peoples hands as possible so I'd imagine they sell their PLE as cheaply as possible to get as much market penetration afterwards - they're also something like the 5th biggest software company in the world so they can afford to absorb the costs - Vray is still very much a small boutique company which is one of its best features - the fact that if you've got a problem, you're talking directly to the guy that's making it. You'll never get that support again.

For the record... it costs 1000€ to upgrade your edu license to commercial and 600€ for the subscription per year. Standard commercial license is around 4000€ which is almost twice as much as 3500$.

They have a quasi-monopoly in 3d software. They don't need to penetrate any 3d market further.

My point is, from an economical standpoint, Chaos Group would make a lot more money if they would lower student fees. That would bind more customers. I tried to make that clear numerous times now, and my impression is that most of you paid the full price for the package and hold a grudge against anyone getting the package for a lot less for learning purposes.

I took the pricing from the official onlineshop right before posting. And i also said that the abroad versions are far more expensive so i dont get the point.
You didnt mention upgrade before hence i misread your post.

As for monopoly. You really think they will lean back and keep things as they are now ?? Wouldnt be too clever from an "economical standpoint" would it ? So of course they DO have to penetrate the market further...bear in mind that they have to keep stockholders happy...Especially now that they spend shitloads of money to buy the competition...

And regarding making a lot more money, that might be your opinion, but i doubt that.

ANY shareholder company needs to keep penetrating markets.

And any VIZ-company would be happy if students would be VRay experts.

But from an economical point of view, it would not make much sense to offer 3rd party products for extremely low prices to students. Autodesk is a large company that lives on "market penetration" and would even benefit from offering its products for free to students. With all the render products on the market the choice on which renderer (or any other 3rd party product) you are going to use in the future is only determined after you have choosen your job. The chance you will keep working with Max (or any Autodesk product for that matter) is way more likely. Of course you can bet on getting a VRay job, just like you choose an education, but then you should INVEST in your future yourself, but then again you can always change your mind and have a BLENDER future...which is free....for now

Sudden outbreak of common sense: Vray package price just dropped from 180€ to 110€ at my reseller. Is this the time to buy, or the time to wait vor Vray 2.0 ?

I agree with this guy at some point, as cheapper the student version as better for chaousgroup in future.

You should have a price for schools and an even lower one for students.

This is like Farming, Students are your Seeds. As much you spread, as much you will collect in Future.

Talking about the Full License: Then I think you should have diferent prices based on region economies, per example 3th world countries cann't afford 1st world software prices. Therefore Piracy rates are so High in those countries.

There's just one company I know it's going this. It's called Progesoft, his software "progecad" for the States cost u$s 600, for Latin America u$s 300. Exactly the same software.

Maybe this is not a bad Idea to take into account.

                      Just a point of you!!
                      Have a nice week!!
