Yes, it would be best to use photon-mapped caustics. It works much better with a direct light, rather than a VRayLight. Make sure the light beam is narrow enough and slightly pointed towards the ground, so that the photons hit it eventually. I have some examples, will post them when I get to the office on Monday.
