2D Simulation Mode

The feature list mentions a 2D mode, how this can be accessed? The help file
doesn't mention it at all... Maybe an simple scene would be nice as well...

it's simple, just set the grid size in some direction to be 1, better y or x, to keep the embedded gravity alive.

to keep it alive? are you sure that the grid has size 1 in the unneccesary direction?
