  • vRay, my scene looks doll, need some input plz.

    Im new to rendering big scenes, exterior, so have no clue how to setup light for such big scene, have tried for a few days now to get it right, but without luck as you can see




    As you can see it looks flat, and really boring, i know that vray can do so much better, but just me that cant.
    Any 1 got some tutorials, info, or even want to take a try at the scene (i then can upload the scene for you), let me know.

    Try throwing a noise map or texture in your direct/sun light source to simulate the effect of clouds casting shadows on the ground, this will help break-up the flat lighting effect. The base of the buildings terminate to evenly also, try putting some shrubbery/garden beds in to break up the very straight intersection with the ground. The grass is also to perfect, some variation would help it alot.

        you added the light posts and destaerated.. what else did you do? It does look better. Maybe some activity on the road.. people and cars.

          You sun angle is too directly behind the camera, put it at a 45deg angle to the camera and lower it a bit to get longer shadows, blue up your dark values as well with a color balance adjustment in photoshop.

          Your edit looks much better, keep going with it, and please change your sun!

              Now that you say that, his camera almost _implies_ tilt shift. I would look for another camera angle, something a bit more personal (lower and closer) if it's possible.

                Developers seem to always want views like this for some reason and I always try and steer them away from it, or add some lower shots. You get a lot of roof and road, not something that necessarily makes me want to buy the property. Not saying it's imposssible to make a nice shot out of it, it just takes more work to make them "inviting".

                    I would try to put the sun to the right of this particular image. Right now you have the focal point of the houses in complete shadow. I would put the sides of the house in shadow with the main face of the house in sunlight to create more interest and draw the viewer's attention there.

                    Composition wise, rule of thirds definitely would apply here, especially to the second image.

                          Definitely getting better.

                          I would tone down the RED fire hydrant a little so it doesn't stand out as much. That is nit-picking, but other than that...making very good progress.
