  • Cumulus?

Basic fire and basic mushrooms happen by itself. Grid, source, there you go.
But now i would like to generate some slow moving cumulus clouds and or even better some mixture of clouds to fly through.
Is Phoenix a good choice for something like that? If yes, some ideas to get into the right direction would be appreciated.

sounds like a hard task for me, because the clouds are not just moving water vapour, they appear and disappear constantly. perhaps this can be achieved particularly in the shader, setting some step function- like transparency, but this does not cover the entire condensation behavior, because it depends not only on the concentration, but on the temperature as well.

      Thank you for the reply.
I will try to play around with animated maps on the source to get something that looks OK-ish without the need of super-correctness... but usualy super-correct looks best :-/

i think you have to use the init mapping here, because there is no geometry producing the clouds, they just appear "in the nothing".

I would be curious to your cloud results as well. I played with some cloud tests -- got okay results, but not exactly what I needed for production -- stills looked good but not when playing back. I am sure it was user error, but I found another solution so would be interested in what you found.

i didn't try any tests, but without shading tricks i think it is impossible. the real clouds have flat lower surface, beacuse this is the line where the condensation conditions are satisfied. so i would produce just a horisontal moving turbulent smoke and will cut the lower part modulating by texture in the shading.

I have to confess that the idea did not go beyond the planning stage

If it comes up again, you might want to look at Krakatoa for this. Bobo developed a pretty cool way of doing cumulus type clouds with that.
