    what are some most common reasons for having dark grain in the cooler parts of the fire while rendering with v-ray?

          looks like the layer emiting the light is too thiny and some rays are skiping it. try to decrease the step of advancing (by default is 50%)

          btw, the forum has storage for pictures and small zip files, see the "manage attachemnt" button below the text box.

            thanks!
            i think that was it!
            oddly enough, i've tried going 0 and 100 before and of course didn't get what i wanted
            the render time doubles if i set it to 15, but the grain is gone
            is there a good way to seed up the rendering now?

            i can't help but make a general comment on the learning curve ...
            while it's VERY simple to get your first flame burning, anything beyond that is rather scketchy
            the manual needs 10 times more pictures than it has right now
            and definitions like "Solid Mode - Enables solid mode" that simply state the obvious are of limited value to users
