  • VRay 2.0 on Maya 2011 SP1 very unstable

    Hi there,

my acount still waits for activation so I'll post here. I'm a very new VRay customer and unfortunatelly ran into a problem I need help with.

    Overview:
VRay 2.0 runs extremly unstable on my system. I can start rendering into the VRay framebuffer or batch render and it will nearly always (9/10 times) crash and my computer re-boots.

    System:
    CPU: core i7-970
    MB Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5
    RAM: Kingston 24GB DDR3-1600
    GPU: PNY GTX470
    GPU Driver 270.61

    V-Ray 2.00.04 April 28 2011
    V-Ray core 2.00.01
    Maya 2011 SP1

    Win XP64
    Win 7x64

    In Detail:

    Standard CPU rendering
I'm experiencing re-boots in both standard CPU rendering and with RT (CPU and open CL). My scene consists of a fairly big asset approx. 380.000 polys a few blend materials with a big amount of 4k textures. I'm talking about a multi-patch uv layout of 24 patches, in total 504 4k texture maps being loaded for rendering, including displacement. It works for a while and 1/10 times it renders the complete image. 9/10 times it calculates the light cache and renders 10-20% of the image then Maya totally crashes and my computer re-boots. It's not RAM related. The rendering uses 16GB of RAM and I have 24GB built in.

Today I've tried a complete re-install of Windows XP64, Maya 2011 SP1 and VRay 2.0 - same thing. I then tried Windows 7 x64, Maya 2011 SP1 and VRay 2.0... Same thing only RT works a little better.

    RT CPU/open CL rendering
I created a very simple scene. A gray plane, a few chrome spheres and a cube with a vray light material. I turned on GI, told Maya to use the VRay FB and pretty much used the default settings for rendering with IPR. It works fine and looks as expected as long as I don't change any shader settings. I can tumble the camera (persp or physical camera alike) and RT will always update my rendering. Whenever I click into the Attribute Editor to change a value (color intensity e.g.) Maya crashes and re-boots... It doesn't make a difference whether I use RT CPU oder open CL mode, it will instantly crash on Win XP64. On Win7 64 it lets me change the values a few time before it crashes and re-boots.

    So I have several problems.
    a) CPU rendering won't work correctly
    b) RT doesn't work with the light material

Since this isn't enough I now have the problem

    c) after several crashes on Win 7, VRay can't obtain a license anymore. Dongle is programed to 2.0 (I just received it a few days ago). When I try to start the VRay License Server I get this message:

One of the following licenses are required:
    - WibuKey 250897:77558101
Failure reason: WibuKey API eror occured (Error 17)!

Win7 tells me WibuKey Network Server has started. Is there such a thing as a network license when using a dongle? I thought the license would be a dongle/node locked license.

I need help here. I'm desperately trying to find what is wrong.

    Thanks

I just realized I poste in the Max section of the forum... What a great first post... dooh!

Can an admin please move this post into the Maya section? Thanks and my appologies for this mistake.

If your computer reboots, this points to a hardware problem - overheating processor(s) and/or RAM defects. V-Ray by itself cannot cause your computer to reboot, the most it can do is crash Maya. It would be best to check your CPU temperature and the RAM for defects.

      Best regards,
      Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Thanks Vlado for pointing me in the right direction. I checked my RAM and while doings so I realised it had the wrong frequency settings for my CPU set in the BIOS which messed up my renderings and vray RT. Now everything works as expected. Thanks again.
