    Decals

    Flipside

Tried that - doesn't seem to resize the 'bump' on the rendering!!?

Oh dear god - here we go again?!? - thud, thud, thud (sound of head on wall)

Any helpers - I've done many searches for posts!

    Cheers

I think the problem come from trying to scale mapping types other than "Planar." I seem to be able to scale "Planar" mapping, but I seem to run into problems with "Box" for example.

If I were to map a Polysurface Cube with the "Box" mapping type, I can't seem to change the map scale. However, If explode the polysurface, apply individual "Planar" maps to each face of the cube, I'm able to scale the bump. I don't know if its a bug, or something thats not implemented yet.

        Hi bdcali
It's only 'Planar' that works for me to - but your work around although useful for some objects would not work for something that needs a 'solid' entity eg a wine glass? - or would it?

Is there any way to get the right proportions right away when using a decal. When using a planar decal it would be nice if it could sence what size the original picure is (like Flamingo) instead of having to draw a box for ref. and resize to that.

Is there also any way to use the cylindrical mapping by say just 1/4 of a turn, if I for instance want to map a decal on a bottle. Right now I?m forced to make the label the entire lenght of the unrolled surface and that doesn?t seem right. But perhaps I?m just not doing it right.

I think, it should work and you should see the right placed decal in the rendered viewport. It's more general mapping issue not only for VfR. Try to set cylindrical mapping and set texture repeat 4 times in the one direction and in the other so that the ratio looks right again. Than I would axial move the mapping widget to place the decal in the right hight at the bottle.

Sure I can tile the map but that will as you say repeat it four times, I just want to show it one time and I might be rendering on glass so they repeat on the inside. I still can?t really find a good sollution. I am also having problems with that all decals seem to be double sided. What if I want to have a decal just once on a transparent bottle for instance. I just can?t get it not to duplicate itself on the backside of that bottle then.

Whenever you have fixed a problem, where can one find the updated versions of Vray4rhino then?

                Decals

We will announce any Service Releases on our website and forums.

Perhaps you could upload the scene your having trouble with and I could take a look at it. If you'd like just compress the 3dm file along with any textures it needs and upload it to ftp://ftp.asgvis.com/incoming - if you'd like you can password protect it (just remember to send the password to me). If you choose to do this please name it something so I know its yours, for example Joakim_DecalScene.zip. Thanks.
                Best regards,

                  Decals

We don?t have an open FTP here at the office so I can?t upload anything. What I want is to make a glass bottle with two decals. One label on the front and another on the back, both facing out. But I also want to see the back label from the front, just like you would if you where looking into a real bottle fron the store (display label on the front and ingredient label on the back). But when using double sided material they get mixed up and when unchecking double sided then just one is visible. Also even though specifying two channels the material just ingnores that and mixes them up. Is it possible to download a finished scene that adresses this and just see how that is made?

                  Thanks a lot/
                  Joakim

                    Hi Joakim,

what you can do is make an offset of the glass bottle (only the outer side of it) over a small distance, and cut this to more or less the size of your decal. Then apply a diffuse material to it and put a mask in the transparency slot of this diffuse material. The mask is working as a clipmap (white parts will be invisible in your rendering) The decal bitmap should be of the same size and goes into the map slot of the diffuse color.

I hope this is clear. As for how to do the mapping, you can read about this in Micha's tutorial C.

                      Decals

I made a little testfile (decal test joakim.rar) and uploaded it to the FTP. It has two problems I can?t solve.

                      1. It has two diffuse layers with maps and two channels in the mapping settings linked from the material. Though chanel nr 2 is ignored and only chanel nr 1 is used for both materials. To me this seem like a bug and it has happened on every file I have tried it on.

                      2. Without splitting, ofsetting or doing other annoying workarounds with the object, how can I get one map (decal) on the front and also one on the back both be visable at the same time (using glass material). If chosing double sided material they are both visable on both sides (they are dispayed two times) and if I uncheck double sided then I can just see the front label.

Thanks Gijs for the sollution you suggested but it?s not usable in a workflow when if we want to show different label designs on the same bottle and it?s to much of a hassle in the long run.

Michs tutorial only shows one label beeing maped from one side, no biggie there. The problem is what happens if i want more decals on one material and if that is a transparent material.

I think currently this is the quickest solution. The offset and cutting proces is a matter of 30 seconds And you can create as many labels with this method as you want. Also changing labels is as easy as switching 2 maps, as long as you keep their sizes the same. This would mean you just keep the offsetted surface as large as your largest label design and use the mask to determine the effective size. I'll post an example file shortly.

EDIT: I will post an example in the general section of the forum.

Thanks Gijs for the file in the general section. Ok, it?s not to much of a workaround but still a but annoying that is has to be done that way. Thanks a lot though.

Did you get a chance to look at why it?s not possible to put multiple planar-maped decals linked to different channels. It?s like it can?t see that it should link to ie channel 2 even though I have set it in the material, and they all get stuck on channel 1.

Thanks for all the quick answers.
