  • Bump map and displacement questions

    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to Vray, i've been playing around with it for a couple of weeks now and have a few questions.

    1) Some of the bump mapping features do not seem to work, but maybe I'm not using them correctly. For example, under the Material Editor -- Maps -- Bump map tab, you have the option of using a bitmap, fresnel, grid, cloth, etc. I've had no problem with the bitmap or fresnel, but when i try most of the others, like the grid for example, i get no bump effect. I'd like to do a tile but the only way i can do it is via a bitmap. I'd like to use the grid because it would be easier. Is anyone else having this problem?

    2) Does (or will) Vray for Rhino support true displacement mapping, instead of just bump mapping?

    3) Also, I'm having a little trouble with the antialising feature under the the options -- Image Sampler tab. I test rendered a simple room to learn the program, and everything looks nice and smooth except for the window area. I've adjusted all of the settings back and forth and have not seen an improvement. I've tried, Fixed Ratio, Adaptive QMC, and Adaptive Subdivision and have not been able to fix the window area. There is a radius on all edges of the window area as well. Any ideas?

    Here's an image of this. . .

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

    Hoop.

    Bump map and displacement questions

Procedural maps dosn't work for bump now - only image textures. It's a bug.

"Clamp output" at the color mapping could help, but the image could look dull. Seems to be a classical mathematical render problem of Vray. Here a quote from an other post:

In the Color mapping section of the V-Ray options, there is a check-box "Clamp output" which is On by default. To get a HDR image, you need to turn this off. Note that un-clamped HDR output may produce jagged edges in certain cases (e.g. very bright thin hilights).

Its not really a bug - its just not a feature of the V-Ray procedural textures at this time. Only the bitmap texture supports the bump interface

Also displacement is not available to us through the current V-Ray SDK

Micha, can you post an example of a dull image because of the clamp output option? All it does is clamp colors brighter than 255 to white; you don't even see it on screen, it's only usefull if you want to further post process your images in high bit depth.

For the majority of users, clamp output will produce better images because it doesn't have the AA problem.

So, the real displacement mapping isnt available and wont be present in the final release!?

Wouter, thank you to bring me on it.

Displacement is not available to us via the V-Ray SDK. So that means it won't be present in the final release. There is nothing we can do about it. Sorry

As soon as its available in the SDK. We've requested it though.
