  • Invisible environment map

    Hi,

I am test driving Vray for the first time. I am a long time Flamingo user and am making some comparisons. I have two simple questions to begin:

    1) Is it possible to render objects with a reflected environment but not have the environment seen in the background? I recently rendered a load of saucepans in Flamingo 2 which has this option. If I had to post edit the images, it would have taken lots longer. See example attached.

    2) I am struggling with adding texture maps. Does anyone know of a good tutorial? I've looked at the 3DS ones, but they don't help. A good example would be mapping a simple picture frame with a wood texture. (I am having to map every single face at the moment.)

    Thanks in advance,
    Gavin

This is what I would like to acheive in Vray withour editing out the background.

No, but you can place a plane with a white emitter material in the background.

Texturing: look at the user tutorial M material - you will find a rhino file with textured materials.

        Hi Micha,

That is what I have previously done, but it is then reflected onto the object. (Something that I would like to avoid.)

        Thanks,
        Gavin

Better idea: you render your image with background and alpha channel and use both in photoshop. The alpha ignore the background. If you save your image as png and open it in photoshop, than the alpha is integrated and the background is invisible. You must set a background color only. So, it will looks like at your linked example image.

Yeah - unfortunately one of Micha's suggestions will be the only possible way at this time. Per-object environments isn't hooked up at this time - though it is on our list of things to add.
