  • Creating Lightsources?

    Hello,
im really satisfied with the results i get from this Plugin for Sketchup as long as i work with GI in an open scene. But if i make a room with no external light source. How do i set up the light? Is there anything missing for that or should i use Emissive in the material editor to create lights? Really don't know then how to adjust shadows if it's a spotlight or other types of lightsources like a window...

If someone got a good indoor setup, i would be glad if you could share that file here... or a screenshot of the settings.

Currently you would need to use an emissive material mapped to an object to generate light. We would like to make some different direct light sources but we're still planning how to implement them.

Have you seen how RPS Ray Trace works? (link)

What would be the time schedule of implementation of emitters?
It would be nice to be able to use vraylights/squarelights/arealights/spotlights/pointlights for both interior and exterior rendering .

We'd like to get at least rectangle / point lights ASAP. We'll try for spotlight/etc if time permits.

              Creating Lightsources?

              thanks for the reply joeb.
That's great news. I am very curious about area lights.

              I was wondering...
For the moment i try to assign an emitting layer to a surface in a window opening. Light always comes out too white and way too harsh

What is the difference in light quality between a surface emitter and the square emitters (vraylight) you guys are developping?

I ask this because i don't want to spoil my time using emitting surfaces when they don't give a good illumination in the first place.

              another thing:
I am totally confused about sky settings.
              I experiment a lot but i don't know what i am doing.
Which sketchup settings besides location and time influence the sky by default?
When i override the sky by checking GI in 'environment' i get to set up a 'sky'. Does this sky have a sun? How would this sun be set up (position etc...?).What's the difference between 'intensity' and 'size'

              Sooo many questions.

              regards,
              biebel

The main difference between using a rectangle emitter and an area light is the emitter doesn't get sampled the same as an area light. Also an emitter only emits indirect light - meaning you need GI on to see the effect. The emissive material has many uses - but if you are not pleased with its illuminating qualities then I would just wait for the actual V-Ray lights to be implemented.

As for the sky - I'll try to find definitions of all the Sky settings. I don't know them all off-hand. The only things I currently get from Sketchup as far as the Sky goes is the sun vector, this is determined by location / time. Everything else comes from the Sky Texture settings. The sky does have a sun, but its controlled via Sketchup only.

I hope that clears up some of your questions. I'll post again when I get more information about the individual sky settings
                Best regards,

                  Creating Lightsources?

                  thanks for the explanation.

I don't know if it is a bug but once i set the 'sky' (at Options/environment /GI) and i reduce the 'size' (to 0.001) i seem to loose the 'sun' because when i set 'size' back to the default 1 and rerender the 'sun' doesn't show up again.

For some reason i can only render a direct 'sun' at full brightness (it burns the view) or with no direct sun at all.
I tried several ways to obtain a tempered sun (semi clouded day) but had no luck so far getting there.
Maybe the sun/sky 'reset' isn't fixed after all in beta 2 ?

I'll post the sun/sky param description as soon as I can get them. There could be another issue - but if you are seeing your values in the texture editor than that should mean they are not being ignored. I'll look into it deeper today.
