Download the free image viewer XnView. XnView ignore the alpha information and if you open an image in XnView you can copy and paste the image to PS. Or you save your renderings as bmp.

      Re: Alpha help

I would save as a Targa (.tga) it supports alpha channels, and when you open it up in photoshop the alpha channel will actually show up as an available channel, which isn't the case with a png for example. Not only that, the background will still "be there" and won't completely disappear like a png either. Most of the other formats (hdr, exr) are probably overkill for what your looking for, and if you use those you'll have to worry about gammas and converting float data to 8-bit...so my suggestion would be targas.

          PNG!!!!

Adobe (aka Macromedia) Fireworks is a far superior application over Photoshop for using items with alphas. The PNG format has layers, transparency, slice and web information all in 1 format that FireFox and IE 7 (thanks for finally catching up bill gates) can understand and read. Photoshop has really dropped the ball on PNG's and should catch up quick.
