I think the best bet might be to join the mesh in max, so that all of the components are within one object. When things are multiple objects, SU may want to place every one at the origin. I haven't dealt with 3ds files in a while, but thats my best guess.

thanks dalomar i'll try it, buts its strange that so few people have experienced this problem, it only seems to happen when i import the 3ds files that i myself have created (and all the evermotion free samples) but the 3ds i gte from www.archive3d.net all work fine
any suggestions as to why this might happen?

Yes, in 3d studio max, what you will have to do is to export the file (not save or save as copy max files) with extention 3ds. that way in SU you will import the 3ds.

that wont work either, i had been exporting the whole time... i figured out that before u export you have to attach all the objects together (when u right click on an object u can then select attach) that fixes the position issue, and on import into sketchup choose model units as an import unit size, and that fixes the size issue...

im just surprized that so few people have experienced this problem of exporting from max to sketchup...

What may help is to move all of the pivot points of the objects to the origin and then export. Again, its a long shot, but may work.
