  • Correct bitmap size

I have a question....how should a bitmap texture, billboard or any bitmap be optimized for Vray? real size? dpi? format?

this question is focused in obtaining high quality renders and low render times...

It really depends on your scene and how detailed you need certain objects/materials to be.

This depends on what you want to do with image later. For example, if you need to bring it into photoshop then you might want to save it as a png because it will save the different layers that you add in the V-ray options.

          Re: Correct bitmap size

          1. Forget DPI (needed only to know what resoulution (in pixel) your render should be)
          2. Textures size: this really depends of your final rendering size... offcourse usually bigger textures are better but there is no sense to use a 4000x4000px Map if your render is 800x600, also big textures use a lot of ram, so be carefull.
          3. Output format: i always use exr so i can control exposure, gamma etc in Photoshop without banding effects; between other format i think the .tga is the better. Both exr and tga have separated alpha channel.

PS: i'm using again Photoshop CS2 (i know that in CS3 and CS4 exr are premultiplied so you can't have a separated alpha channel)

I am rendering images at A2 size and later converting them to 300dpi and most of my material textures are only 512x512 and lower, this works fine for me. So I'm rendering at 7000x3654 and then shrinking it down to get the 300dpi

I agree with ALTO. Although I only save as an exr image if I can't render a large image in the frame buffer.

Sorry if my answer didn't help before, but I hope this helps.
