    Hello there, i have a Q, how much can rhino and Vray support in file sizes?, I mean can rhino + Vray render a complex model of 540 MB (Proengineer>IGES>Rhino)? does it depends more of the software or the machine? or the OS?

    From my experience it depends on:

    * OS -> best 64bit
    * RAM -> best 5GB or more
    * output size of the image -> large images need more RAM, try vrimg output
    * size of the used textures -> large textures eat up your RAM
    * used calculation methods -> I'm not sure what are the best one for low RAM usage, but the bucket size could be important

    At the forum tutorial section you find a thread how to save RAM for rendering large scenes. 540MB Rhino file should be a hard problem and I suppose so, you must do many or all tricks. I suppose so MoI3D for high quality and fast low poly meshing will be a must. If you have problems to load the file to Rhino, than you could try to load it fast per MoI3D v2 beta (you must buy v1 to get the beta). Last I opened a 80MB STEP file - Rhino crashed after more than one hour, MoI v2 opened it within 5 minutes (inclusive creating a mesh for displaying - best set a low display mesh quality befor loading a large file). MoI v2 support multicores for meshing.

      In my tests, bucket size makes very little difference in terms of memory usage. Maybe as a last resort, but its not going to do much at all.

      As for calculation methods, for AA, fixed rate is the best, followed by Adaptive DMC, then Adaptive Subdivision. For indirect illumination, brute force methods (DMC) are going to be best in terms of memory. Light Cache may be better than IR, but both are still more than DMC. Photon Mapping will probably be the worst of all of them.
