  • Problem with larger render sizes

    Hi all.

Hope someone can help me. The client I am currently doing some work for requires some larger A2 size renders in order to show one of their clients.
The problem I’m having is when I punch in the sizes for the render which in this case is 7016 x 4961. The render screen looks a little funny during the course of the render. Then at the end no image is produced and nothing can be saved. The program will just crash.

Now I have read the links about rendering large format images and tried to follow those instructions but when I get to the point of rendering the final image, the program cancels the render before it starts.

Can anyone offer any help, I’m quiet desperate to get this problem fixed.
I have even tried rendering an extremely simple model of just a cube and the problem still happens, basically for anything larger than an A3 page.

I would like to attache an image of the render screen so that people can see what I’m seeing, but not sure how to do it on this forum.

And trust me the computer has enough RAM and processor speed to cope with the work load. I.e. Quad Core and 4 GB RAM.

So you have already tried saving the image as a vrimage file?
Have you any displacement in the model?

Is it realy enough? You read the thread at the tutorial section? A 64bit OS and more than 5GB RAM will be best for now. Did you check the RAM usage during the crash? How much RAM is used?

I have tried doing the Vrimage instrustions but at the last step it doesn't render the final image and simply cancels the render as soon as it starts.

And with the amount of RAM... i know people rendering the same image with a lower grade computer. Its just taking double the time. So i dont understand why a better computer then that can just fail as soon as it starts.

I'm no expert and appreciate any and all help I can get, its the only way i'll learn. All I can offer is what i've seen with my own eyes.

Is there an easier to follow tutorial on how to use Vrimage, i cant find the last one I saw on the forum.

Just tick the "render to vrimage" option under 'V-ray Raw Image file' in the Output options tab. Simple as that really, and dont forget to choose a file name.
I have the same experience as you if I try and render out a large model at a high res without using vrimage (i,e. crashes at render startup) but as long as I choose vrimage it renders out fine even if the render start time seems increased. Have you let it sit for a while even if vray seems inactive?

What Micha said was right, your probably running into a 32bit issue where rhino is running out of memory. That image you have takes alot of memory in the frame buffer so the best precautionary tip is to go with a 64bit OS. The Vrimage will work as well (it should).

My experience was, that the vrimage save a few hundred MByte only (the RAM that was needed to hold the pixels of the rendering). Some times this isn't enough and other ways must be gone (lower mesh settings, premeshing&delete NURBS, 64bit OS, ...).
