    Re: Computer specs question?

the first option is damn costly... and if you are not going to do a lot of professional renderings.... it is not recommended since it simply will not fulfill your economics...

What i meant to say that seeing the "buying a computer" as an investment and you will find that there would be very little return for your investment.

Second option ANDECIUALA is much better but it is now obsolete hardware configuration. if you will have any trouble like part failure, you will be in big mess as components will not be available after comming 5-6 months...

I would suggest to go for

    Core i7 860
    Gigabyte P55UD3R motherboard
    2X2 GB DDR3 1333 Mhz RAM
2X250 GB or 2X500 GB HDD in RAID 0 configuration
    ATI Radeon 5770 Graphics Card
    A good Branded 600W SMPS

This system will cost you less than 1000 US Dollars.

    If you have more money
(about 1500 US Dollars) than i would say you should go with core i7 950
    A god X58 based motherboard
3X2 GB DDR3 1333Mhz. RAM and rest being same.

If you have got even more money (about 1750-1800 US dollars)
then keep everything of above and change the Graphics Card with Radeon 5850.

In my openion, core i7 860 would be your best bet as it gives best blend of performance and price.
    Sketchup 8.0.16846, Vray 1.50.22 build 04022013, Core i5 760 3.00 Ghz. (overclocked), 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 SP1 X64

      Re: Computer specs question?

when you compare core i7 950 and core i7 860 you will find that core i7 860 is about 8-10 % slower than 950 but at the same time, it comes at half the price of the core i7 950.... apart from the direct advantage of better performance-to-price ratio, it is also better CPU in terms of thermals... it is a 95 watts rated CPU while 950 is a 130 watts rated CPU...

morale of the story is that 860 consumes less power which gives you advantage in terms of electricity bill also... like in a couple of year time you would be saving about 100 US dollars in electricity bill...

considering all the factors above, core i7 860 becomes obvious choice.

How about the i7 720? I have this on my laptop for Windows 7 Home, but I haven't gotten a chance to install V-Ray on it yet. It only gets 1.6 GHz but can go up to 2.8 GHz with TurboBoost.
          I am currently using V-Ray 1.49.01.

it is not only the Ghz. that counts... first of all you should not consider a laptop cpu in comparision of a deskyop cpu. they are designed for completely different purpose. Laptop cpus are delicate, less power hungry and definately have less number crunching ability... however as a general view... i would say that it will work good, particularly the newer i7 series of laptop cpu due to its strong architectural improvements.

                    Re: Computer specs question?

it cannot be considered a good hardware configuration but if you are new to vray+sketchup, it is not a bad configuration to start with... as you learn more and more about rendering, you may want to have a faster computer...

                      Re: Computer specs question?

Hi! Not sure if i can post here or need to start a new thread. I would also appreciate some advice regarding purchasing a desktop PC for vray (will get 1.49.01) , sketchup, Cad, Adobe, 3d max and other programs an architecture student typically uses.

I am thinking of getting this system:

Biostar TP55 Core i7 Barebones Kit

Biostar TP55 Motherboard - Intel P55, Socket LGA1156, ATX, HD 6CH Audio, Video, PCI Express 2.0, USB 2.0, eSATA, Dual GbE
                      Intel Core i7 870 Processor BX80605I7870 - 2.93GHz, LGA 1156, 8MB L3 Cache, Quad-Core, Lynnfield, Retail
                      Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 4GB DDR3 RAM - PC10666, 1333MHz, 4096MB
                      Seagate ST31000520AS Barracuda LP Hard Drive - 1TB, 5900rpm, 32MB, SATA-3G
                      Samsung TS-H663B Internal DVD Writer - DVD+R 22X, DVD+RW 8X, DVD-RW 6X, DVD-RAM 12X, CD-R 48X, OEM
Ultra X-Blaster Black ATX Mid-Tower Case with Front USB, FireWire and Audio Ports
                      Ultra LSP750 750-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, SLI-Ready, 135mm Fan, Lifetime Warranty w/ Registration

                      with this graphics card:

                      Sparkle SXX4651024D5-NM GeForce GTX 465 Video Card - 1024MB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, Dual DVI, Mini HDMI, SLI, DirectX 11

I have disks for both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows XP so can install either. All my current software is 32 bit since im working from a dual core Macbook Pro.

In terms of Vray - i am trying to render out one of my projects and it's quite a detailed model of an interior/exterior of a building (140 MB, over 1200000 faces).

Is the above hardware a good choice for me? I would appreciate some advice from seasoned vray users
                      Thanks!

                        Re: Computer specs question?

I would also look at AMD Phenom II - six core processors. All the intel i7 are 4 cores. Vray just needs pure processor power, and that's a 50% boost at the same processor frequency. Also, AMD is easy to overclock. (don't have experience with intel)
