  • Can someone help me with this Standing Seam Roof

    I just need help/direction in creating a standing seam roof. I'm fairly new to Vray, so any help would be much appreciated.

    here is an example of something I would like.

    I know how to place bump maps and texture maps (in the diffuse layer I believe) but for some reason its not showing up.

    As a matter of fact, bump maps do not alter the surface normals.
    Clear the bump map and add a displacement map
    You can control the amount of displacement via both the b/w-value of the bitmap and the displacement settings in the options menu.

    But be careful: the invert button is used to create negative displacement. In case the wrong areas stick out, you need to invert the bitmap itself using Photoshop or the like.

      This roofing is pretty low detailed and fairly simple to model. Displacement will increase you render time.
      If I were you I would just model it.

      Displacement more efficient for more complex geometry. Take a look at a roof I did a while ago via vray displacement http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?to...39517#msg39517

        well the whole idea was to save time on the modeling end of it. That project looks amazing to me man. How did u texture map that stone material? Is it planar/box/spherical...I wish there was a lot more explanation in material selection/editing in the vray manual. I keep trying to get the displacement to work but cant understand how i can control the protrusions of the seams. Is it through adjusting black/white levels of the displacement map in photoshop only or is there a number value i need to change vray settings. Or does have to do with what kind of light source you are using.

        Thank you for your help guys, it truly does mean a lot.

          Actually, let me be more descriptive in my question. If you were commisioned to model/render a house with a roof like this, and you were running short on time (as in you couldnt model it) What exact steps would you go through once you've reached this part of the project. The more detailed the better.

          (its not hard to guess that I am in this particular scenario)

          Again, thank you for your help, and your time.

            Re: Can someone help me with this Standing Seam Roof

            for the displacement map:

            black=zero amount
            white=max. amount
            grey values=everything between zero and max.

            Invert checkbox inverts effect (negative displacement along surface normals)
            Multiplier can be used to decrease effect (e.g. 0.5=half the amount)

            Set strength of effect via V-Ray --> Options --> Displacement --> Amount
            Set quality of effect via V-Ray --> Options --> Displacement --> Edge Length
            and/or follow the Quick tips in the menu

            Hope that makes sense...

            PS: In your case, you should have a black bitmap with white stripes in it.

              I'm using SkethUp so i had to texture each segment of the corner individually.

                Thanks guys, this really helped. Especially the displacement options menu, i didnt even know that existed.
