    Hello My name is Samuel Edyson and I'm a college student with desire to learn to achieve awesome 3Ds like you guys do. I started this thread dedicated to my questions regarding Sketchup and V-Ray since I'm a new user in SKetchup + VfSU (thus, there'll be many things happening that I may not understand). Henceforth, any questions that I have will be directed to this thread. I hope this community can help and thank you in advance for those willing to answer any questions in this thread. Here I go.

    I have done my first render, but I don't think I understand why can't my material (wood flooring) appear clearly? There was a lot of burn and flooring looks flat (although there's bump). I added displacement but don't seem to effect much. I am assuming that it is the problem with the render setting, as the wood flooring was the original vismat from ASGVIS (I suppose there shouldn't be any problem in it). Here's the result I made

    Or for those who don't want to download to see my render setting, here's the list of what's changed from the default setting (but otherwise default):
    Global Switches - Default and hidden light unticked, correct RGB and LDR ticked
    Camera - Physical Camera On (Shutter speed 100, F-number 8, ISO speed 100)
    Image sampler - Adaptive subdivision
    DMC Sampler - Noise threshold to 0.001
    Indirect Illumination - Primary IR and Secondary LC
    IR - High (-3 and 0), subdiv 75 sample 30

      Hi Diditzzz
      In order to achieve better result and contrast in the floor you need more light variation. If you look at the reference images it have some open space and the sun in coming through those space, thus you have more lights in those areas and less light in other areas. You can do the same in a closed space, but again you have to add more lights in your scene.
      Other thing is the floor material. We have some good hard wood floor on our download area that you can use for the floor or to get a better understanding of the material setting.

      Your floor look some blurry, I guess you are using Adaptive Subdivision. That anti-aliasing solution is good if you don't have glossiness, reflection, refraction, DOF, ect. If you have those effect on the materials, you should use Adaptive DMC. So use Adaptive DMC instead of Adaptive subdivision (Image Sampler)

        Hi fpedrogo, thanks for the advice ! Another question though, as I've read through the original Jorge Barrero's V-Ray for SketchUp guide, it says that when I use Adaptive DMC for Image Sampling, it only works well when using Adaptive DMC for the primary render engine as well. Will that become of any slightest priority? Will it be okay if I use Adaptive DMC for Image Sampling yet still use Adaptive Subdivision for primary render engine?

          Hi ASGVIS Community. Starting new discussion questions...I am a regular 3dsMax+V-Ray user and I believe many people here are using 3dsMax+V-Ray besides SU+VfSU. I am just wondering if anyone happen to use models (furnitures, etc) designed for 3dsMax use, such as the Archmodels from Evermotion? Well anyways that is not important, my point of question is that how do one import a .3ds file correctly into sketchup? I find the models broken most of the time. Here's the example.
          This is what happens when I import .3ds file from evermotion (archmodels vol. 36) into sketchup

          But this is what it should appear in 3dsmax

          Well If anyone happen to know how to fix this issue, or maybe even give me a source of models (some websites) that gives high quality models for general use (used for common program like 3dsMax but still can be used for sketchup), would be much better. After all, I cannot map the materials very well in most of the models I download from google warehouse (e.g. the fabric, cloth or leather material on sofa, office chair or lounge chair cushion, etc).

          Another question is, when I bought evermotion's archmodels, some of their volume gives not only .3ds and max file, but also these extensions: c4d, dxf, fbx, fryrender, maxwell, mental ray, mxs, obj & scanline. I believe someone very knowledgeable about these programs can please tell me if they can be used for sketchup model importing? what about .3ds models compared to models with these file extensions? I need to know...

          Lastly, thank you everyone for reading my questions. I hope I made it clear so that everyone can easily understand what I mean...

            In regard to importing from 3ds to SU you might get better feedback at SCF (http://forums.sketchucation.com/) - which got more people in regard to general SU use.

            When importing .3ds files into SU the texture files must be in the same folder as the .3ds file.


            Note that the smoothing info from 3dsmax will not be transferred to the .3ds file when importing to SU. .3ds files will always be triangulated. I made a plugin to assist in cleaning up these kind of models: http://forums.sketchucation.com/view...?f=323&t=22920


            SU will only import .3ds and .dwg. With plugins you can import .obj as well. But the importing options are limited.
            Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

                I have had several projects trying to render using mainly sketchup and VfSU. I have been trying to import most of the 3D models from Google Warehouse, but renders fail almost every time I did that. For example. I have this 3D of a church that I could render successfully. After I imported the music instruments (drums, bass, keyboards, sound systems, amplifiers, etc) to the altar stage, there comes trouble. Renders always fail, saying "failed to create dump file 138" something like that. The same goes with a project as simple (and small) as a retail store, where importing warehouse's models as simple as a computer or a small speaker would directly result in failure of render.

                My question is, is there a procedure to importing Warehouse's models in a way that it won't result in failure to render? It stress me a lot knowing that warehouse's models won't render in VfSU right away. Right now my method is, to explode every components from warehouse until they've become single geometries individually. I could render this way, but I don't think it is the right method of doing so.

                Lastly, thank you everyone for reading my questions. I hope I made it clear so that everyone can easily understand what I mean...

                  The best way is to filter out those components you put into your church model. For example you want to put your downloaded skp drums, open it separately first, edit those materials in your preference, pre-render that component, save it then apply it to your church model. I think the best work around for this is to filter the components you use in your church model.

                  This is usually the problem I encounter when I put too much components to my model, vray render fails. Also, check the name of the materials you apply in your model.
                  for example I have a "wall" material, but accidentally I put "12312wall", you will get an vray error message.

                    Hi thanks for the response. I would like to ask though (for I am still new to these procedures). You mentioned edit the materials in the component's file, should I explode everything first? You also mentioned "apply it to my model", do you mean to "import" to the main skp or just to copy the whole component from the skp file itself over to the main skp? :'(

                    Does this mean that numbers will play major role in render failures? Oh my gosh I have always been using "1 wall for feature wall living room, 1 wood parquet for flooring" for material names :-[

                      hi...
                      when i download any component from the ware house, i also download them into a separate file from the one that i'm working with... you dont need to explode it, just be sure that you're not repeating materials... in the end, when your downloaded component is finished, you just have to copy it (i use ctrl + c) and paste it in the scene that you want to render... edited materials will be imported and the component will be ready to render

                          Questions about V-Ray (by DiditzZz) - Render to VRImage (11 November 2011)

                          Guys a question.

                          I just saw the tutorial from fernando regarding render to VRImage in chaos group download section. I would like to ask:

                          1. Chance of my failure to render is about 75% most of times (memory allocation error, temp files full, error console, complex model issue, etc). Is rendering to VRImage the very solution the development team added to solve this issue?

                          2. Will I experience render failure issue when render to VRImage instead of rendering in full?

                          3. Is rendering to VRImage the same speed with rendering in full?

                          4. Advantage to disadvantage of rendering to VRImage? Main difference in terms of workflow between rendering full to rendering into VRImage?

                          And 1 off-topic question to this post:

                          5. I have seen how people have been using the number 2.2 in gamma setting for render (majority of ppl I know are using this number). I saw fernando using that as well, and then the VRImage is converted into Open EXR file to be opened in Photoshop. In that, he corrects the gamma exposure by dividing around (0.4545) the number. I'd like to know why people do that, as well as difference between the gamma exposure of rendering in full in comparation with rendering into VRImage.

                          Any replies will be helpful to me and I thank you all in advance for reading. Cheers...
