  • advanced texture mapping in Rhino using VRAY. Wood Grain

    Hi there
I am looking for more information on advanced texture mapping in Rhino using VRAY as my rendering package

i have hit the wall whilst learning how use wood in my renderings, e.g how to get the scale right, how to get the the wood grain running in to end grain realistically, very much like this image

    http://www.arroway-textures.com/file...o_wood-053.jpg

Could really do with some help, it is very frustrating, lots of time being wasted,
any guidance, good tutorials, or a point in the right direction would be really appreciated.

    Cheers

    Ben

I think you need another kind of texture, one with more detail, wich size does the texture map has?

Hi Ben, unfortunately Rhino does'nt have advanced mapping capabilities, like UV unraping. At this stage, you may use standart mapping techiques -
they also offer good opportunities, if you set them correctly. Just keep on trying.

            Hi
You can use the regular Rhino UV for this kind of mapping. The only problem is a small line where the face meet. As I said in this case. In other more complicate UV mapping you should use other software like Blender, Modo, Maya, 3DS Max or other program that are only to make UV unwrap. But I thin that in this case is easy use the Rhino UV tools and erase the line in Photoshop. I duplicated the scene that you have in the image, just to make a test. A very quick test. I use Box projection for the UV Mapping and I didn't erase the UV Box projection line in order that you can see what I'm talking about the "small line where the faces meet".

Fernando maybe you can share him the wood texture, also I think the problem could be the scale of the map...

Do you think Rhino is just as good as 3d studio max for this sort of application or should I look at becoming more adapt using max?

In my personal opinion Rhino is a Nurbs modeling software and it is better for precise modeling, 3DS Max is for more organic modeling. Course that you can do nurb in 3DS Max and organic modeling in Rhino. I think that if you know very good rhino just stay in rhino and try to be the better than you can be in Rhino. The learning process in 3DS Max could be very long. In my case my first modeling tools is Rhino and I use Rhino for product design, Architecture, jewelry, automotive design, etc. For organic modeling I use T-Spline inside Rhino. But again this is my case.
