  • 4 quick questions

Hello there! I'm new to the forums and this software. I have picked it up quite well as it is quite intuitive, but still have one or two problems. with all the things I am trying, the rende times are slowing down quite a lot (I have a 2.0ghz core2duo with 384mb integrated graphics), so I thought I would ask some seasoned users.

Firstly, I wish to make a transparent material blurry, so any light coming through or any images on the other side are visible, but not clear. preferable it becomes more blurry if it is further behind the material.

Secondly, I would like to make a semi-transparent material, that blocks a certain amount of light per cm travelled. So a ray of light decreases in intensity a certain amount per cm of this material travelled. therefore a think amount of this material would be almost opaque, and a thin bit would be almost transparent

    3. how do I change the position of the sun?

finally, I know how to add bump and displacement maps, but is it possible to make it react differently related to how close it is to an intersection, line or corner? is it possible to make it smooth the edges slightly?

thanks in advance to anyone who helps with my problems

...any help? I know the help is free and I should think myself lucky, but I am using the trial here, and I need something good to show my school so I can make them buy pro!

      Re: 4 quick questions

      Hi,

You can find all the information about refraction/reflection layers at the following address :
      http://software.asgvis.com/index.php...=41&Itemid=536
Here is wath you'r looking for (blury effect etc..) in pages 33, 34 and 35.

You can change the position of the sun by using the shadows settings in SU

You can change the offset settings of displacement or bump in theirs settings.

      Hope it help

        Re: 4 quick questions

Hi, sorry for the slow response, I guess I was just used to faster forums :P

Thanks for your help, I got most of it figured out now
just a few other tidbits to help it look more realistic
Firstly, I would like to fill the whole room with a bit of smoke or fog, without slowing things down too much. In theory, I could use the things you've already helped me with (page 35), but I found that didn't wokr, I guess it was because the camera was INSIDE the foggy volume... any tricks I should know there?
Also, I know displacement, etc. but if I have a sharp 90 degree edge in sketchup, is there any way in vray to make it smooth?

3-You can change the sun position sketchup shadow under menu tab

The only way to control the transition of the displacement or bump is through the image that you are using. So if you edit the image to get the transition, it's possible.

              Re: 4 quick questions

Thanks all for your help, I only have one 2 more questions.

Firstly, the longstanding one of fog. I would like a regular mist throughout a whole room, so that distant objects are sort of faded, and also so that beams of light are visible in that they illuminate the mist, not just the nearest surface.
I know how to add fog in sketchup, but this does not continue with the render. Also, I have previously used a black fog in sketchup with all of my faces white in order to create a mask for photoshop, but the main problem is that it doesn't take into account reflection, refraction, or this issue of beams of light reacting with the fog.

Secondly, I've been thinking about lens blur. I would like the subject to be in focus, but as with a normal photo, the background is often bokeh to a varying degree. I have no idea how to do this with vray.
Again I can use fog in sketchup to make a mast, but that still has problems regarding reflectivity, refraction, and also sketchup still does shading on faces, so I found that faces that were at an angle to the camera were more blurred than those facing the camera.

Any ideas about any of these? and again, thanks for all your help.
