I need help, new to rhino and vray

I designed a stool in rhino and now need to render it. I was sick on the day we were taught to render, and so ive been going crazy looking at tutorials but most if not all just confuse me more...
I downloaded a wood material and a ground material to use and saved to my desktop... I clicked the wood pieces, then went to vray material editor... Then i click new material by right clicking, then import, but i am unable to import the materials on my desktop? why
If yall know have advice, anything im a desperate student!!!
Will check back tonight, but most likely in the morning... Thanks to all who help.

Is the material .vismat file?

You only can import vismat files in rhino vray.

If the material is vismat, maybe he is damege...try to download again or download another.

Have you searched the meterials from the dowload section?

Another good thing to do is to start by working through the manual. Just go page by page to learn the basics. It will get you started on the right foot when making basic materials. The tweaking will come later.
