  • blurred shadows through frosted glass with caustics

    Hi,

Is it possible to get a blurred shadow effect through frosted glass using caustics? The affect shadow option only gives a very basic shadow. In reality you would get a much more blurred and kind of speckled effect.

wouldn't you want to use a reduced glossiness in the refraction layer - that's typically the way to get a frosted glass effect. It also affects the shadow.

I couldn't get the frosted glass to affect the shadow.

Do you have a fog color specified for your glass?

        Can you post an image?

Edit: I did some quick tests (well, not so quick - frosted glass takes forever to render) and I get sharp shadows too for objects behind the frosted glass, where I would expect them to be blurry. Not sure what the issue is.

OK, finally found some info, since I want to know as well about this issue. What I found is that the "Affect Shadows" checkbox should be off, and use caustics to generate the blurred shadows. It's the fakery in the "Affect shadows" that gives the sharp shadow.

This is where I found the info

Edit: could work great with the right settings...

Thanks for finding out. I too read that same post and came here I thought caustics were the only way, but I just wanted to make sure.

eh, except for that I haven't found the right caustics settings. The shadows appear to be just from GI and not sun caustics. Maybe Fernando or someone who knows what they're doing could weigh in.

Edit: oh yeah, forgot about the whole caustic search radius thing for sunlight. I was wondering why I wasn't getting any effect. Better to do this with artificial lighting.
