  • the right graficcard

    hi,

i´m planing to build me a new system for rendering, at the moment i´m confused about the graficcard.
does it make sense to get the gtx 680, i ´ve read in several tests that the gpgpu power is very lower, does this affect the vray rt power?
is there any reason not to buy a raedeon card? i want to buy the best card, money is not so importent as long as it pays back in performance...
(but i dont want to have a quadro or a double gpu card). by the way, how important is the cpu when i´m using vray rt for rendering?

    thanks

I think you should probably head over to the vray RT forums (if you have access) as there are a few interesting discussions going on over there, in particular: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...ghlight=kernel

Im in the same boat where i need to purchase very soon but as usual it's not a great time to commit to anything right now...

The graphics card only matters if you use the GPU render mode (there is also CPU-only mode). However like Pixelcon wrote, there are still some uncertainties about the 680. It has indeed shown lower performance on GPGPU tests, but it's not clear if this is due to drivers or the hardware.

This is equally uncertain; there have been more issues getting V-Ray RT GPU to work on an AMD card compared to an nVidia card.

Like I mentioned, V-Ray RT can work in two modes - CPU and GPU; the CPU mode has a lot more capabilities but is typically slower than the GPU version, which is more limited, but can be very fast with suitable graphics cards (e.g. 580 or 590).

      Best regards,
      Vlado

thanks vlado for your answer, i guess it would be the best to wait a few more weeks until somebody here posts a benchmark with the gtx680 or the ati 7970.
its still a posibility to get a gtx 580 for a lower price....
