  • rectangular lights leave black shapes in my rendering when i use toon

    Hi
has anyone experienced problems with their rectangular lights when they try and render with the toon feature. Whenever i have a rectangular light in a scene, the light always shows up black in the rendering even if i've selected the invisible toggle that i normally makes them go invisible. This only seems to be a problem when i'm using the toon feature for certain materials. Is there a setting that i'm missing in order to make the lights go invisible again?
    thanks
    L

Hark! A voice crying in the wilderness. Sorry no one has answered your question yet. I guess with Sketchup, there's much more control over line styles straight from SU, I don't know anyone using the toon feature really. Could you post an example file (link to a shared file would be fine.) maybe if someone else can see the behavior, you might get some comments.

          A,
thank you for your reply. I've included a simple image for you to understand the problem. My models are a little more complicated than this geometry but this image shows that the problem is happening with a new file with simple geometry.
anyways... the light goes black only when i make the vray rectangular light invisible.
i've tried changing a bunch of settings but no luck getting the actual light to be invisible instead of black. maybe there is a setting that i'm missing
any help would be really appreciated since the toon effect is really great and i've been struggling with this problem for a long time now

          thanks!

Are you making the light itself textured with the toon material? I've never tried, but it sounds like it could be a bug. Did you try adding a plane and put your toon material on that. There's an option in the material editor you can change to not cast shadows, so it won't affect your lighting. If you need the light to be invisible, you could make the material for the plane transparent. Just some thoughts, hope it helps.

              A,
              i think i have figured out a work-around!
but let me say first i believe it's a bug as well. I do not add the toon texture to the lights. So i just realized that the problem is happening only when there is a toon material behind the rectangular lights from the perspective vantage point. if make the the material for example the ceiling NOT be a toon material and put a rectangular light in front then everything works fine. But if that ceiling is a toon then the light turns black for some reason. I can't believe it took me so long to figure this one out. anyways i hope if it is a bug that it can be fixed at some point. but for the time being i will make sure my background material is not a toon. btw, i had tried the turn-off shadows a bunch of times thinking the same thing as you but i get these even stranger black boxes that show up and then the program bug splats on me.
thanks for your quick reply again
